HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 30, 2021) – Junior
Catalina Abusada knocked home a loose ball in the 64th minute to send the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team over Lycoming College 2-1 Saturday in a MAC Freedom match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Senior
Sierra Ghougasian netted her first goal in nearly three years for the Ducks, who improved to 8-5-4 on the year and to 5-1-2 in league play. Stevens has won at least eight matches in each of the last 11 seasons. Stevens will be the third seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament after DeSales defeated Wilkes 2-1 earlier in the afternoon.
Bella Green found the back of the net in the 22nd minute for Lycoming, who fell to 11-7-1 on the year and to 3-4-1 in MAC Freedom play. In their first season in the MAC Freedom, the Warriors did not advance to the conference tournament.
Graduate student
Madison Starr began the winning play with a long strike from just beyond the left corner of the 18. The shot rang off the crossbar, falling to the feet of Abusada, who was well-positioned at the center of the six. Abusada calmly collected the carom and tapped it into the net for her second goal of the season. Starr, who made her first start as a Duck, was credited with her career-best second assist.
Trailing 1-0, Ghougasian drew the Ducks even with her first goal since Nov. 3, 2018. The Glenville, Pennsylvania native, who also made her first start of the season, took a feed from senior
Taylor Whitlock in the back-right corner of the 18 and sent it into the left side of the net to put Stevens on the board. Whitlock recorded her first career assist on the play. Ghougasian became the 12th Duck to score a goal this season.
Senior
Izzy DiDario made one save in recording her eighth win of the season. Jess Riordan made four saves in defeat for the Warriors.
Prior to the match, Stevens honored its 10-person senior class in a special pre-match ceremony.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots, including a 12-1 margin in the second half. The Ducks finished the regular season outshooting 15 of their 17 opponents.
- Stevens enters the postseason holding each of its last four opponents to nine shots or fewer.
- The Ducks held a 6-2 margin in shots on target. Seven of the Ducks' last eight opponents were held to four or fewer shots on frame.
- Stevens had one corner in each half, while holding Lycoming without a corner. It marked the second time this season that the Warriors were held without a corner.
- It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
Unsung Hero
- Although it did not show up in the boxscore, graduate student Kaitlyn Casiano played a key role in setting up the Ducks' opening marker. The Phoenixville, Pennsylvania native went a lengthy run through the 18 and did some nifty footwork to keep the ball inbounds near the goal line. Casiano crossed the ball back through the 18 to sophomore Morgan Whitlock, who tilted the play back in the other direction, finding Taylor Whitlock, leading to the scoring play.
From the Pitch - Senior Sierra Ghougasian
- "I think that everyone showed up to just have some fun today, and that's what we did! It really took our whole team to win today and I am proud that we did!"
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
- "Good rebound today after giving up the early goal. Also fun to see some different names on the scoresheet this afternoon. Overall, we are still trying to find ways to overcome what outside forces completely bombard us all with: putting the 'Me' in front of the 'We.' It has been difficult at times this season and today, we are still trying to overcome it. We've got some incredible people in our locker room and amazingly skilled individuals that are still striving to find more common ground. Fortunately, we have earned more time for us to do it. At times, we can play this incredibly difficult game at an exceedingly high level, and the challenge is to make sure that we are doing it collectively, and to the best of our ability."
- "We head into the postseason aiming to be the team we are capable of being and we'll work towards being the best version of ourselves on Thursday."
