HOBOKEN, N.J. (Oct. 6, 2021) – Led by a stellar defensive effort, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team pitched a shutout for the second consecutive game and three different student-athletes scored to send the Ducks to a 3-0 victory over Eastern University Wednesday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Stevens has now won seven straight games to match the second-longest win streak in program history set in both the 2019 and 2009 (twice) seasons as they move to 8-2 overall this year while Eastern fell to 2-9.
The Ducks now have gone 141 straight minutes without conceding a goal and have posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2018. In that stretch, Stevens set went 177 consecutive minutes without conceeding a goal.
Offensively, first-year
Lauren Jones and fifth-years
Brynn Froehlich and
Allison Buffenbarger all scored their second goal of the season for Stevens as the Ducks outshot Eastern 21-3 with a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Jones got Stevens on the board first in the 20th minute of game action thanks to a fantastic individual effort. The first-year from Latrobe, Pa., was able to force an Eagle turnover just outside the circle, collect the steal and fire a shot just past the outstretched leg of the goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning goal.
It was Jones' first goal since she started her collegiate career with the first goal of the season for the Ducks in a 3-2 win over Marywood University.
The second goal of the game for Stevens came just before halftime on one of what was eventually nine penalty corner opportunities.
After the ball was inserted into the circle, both
Aryana Muscara and
Natalie Logan took shots at the cage that were both saved by Eastern goalkeeper Abby Agapito. The third time was the charm, however, as Froehlich collected the rebound from Logan's shot and buried the ball into the right corner of goal to put the Ducks on top 2-0.
Froehlich now has four points in her last three games after tallying an assist in each of her two previous appearances.
The final goal of the night came in the 53rd minute on a stellar transition opportunity when Muscara raced the ball down the middle of the field and fired a pass into the circle for junior
Lynda Farinella. After realizing she did not have a clean look for a shot, Farinella passed the ball back to the top of the circle for Buffenbarger who hammered a shot home to seal the 3-0 win.
Stevens has now scored at least three goals in each of their last six games to now rank second in the MAC Freedom with 2.9 goals per game.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks ended the night with nine penalty corners and are averaging 11.22 corners per game to remain ranked inside the top-10 in all of Division III (9th).
- Stevens now has eight different student-athletes with multiple goals this season.
- Coming off the bench, first-year Emily Smart led the Ducks with four shots, three of which were on target.
- Agapito made 12 saves in goal for Eastern while Franco saved the one shot on goal opportunity she faced in the game.
- Stevens played aggressively throughout the contest with 59 fouls compared to just 35 for the Eagles.
- The Ducks lead the MAC Freedom with just 16 goals allowed this season and sit third with a 1.6 goals against average on the year.
- Franco did not see much action in goal with just one save on the night. In total, the Stevens defensive unit has allowed just four shots over its past two contests.
- If the Ducks defeat Wilkes University Saturday, the eight-game win streak would sit alone as the second-longest stretch in program history behind only a nine-game streak in the 2008 season in which Stevens won the Empire 8 Conference title and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
- "Tonight was a good test on some of the things we have focus on in recent practices and games. Every time we compete it is an opportunity for us to improve and it's important that we continue to do so. We made some nice adjustments to get the win tonight, and I am always happy when the defense gets a shutout."
