CHESTER, Pa. (March 21, 2021) –
Jessie Masur tossed a complete game and
Samantha Schattin continued to stay hot at the plate to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team to a 2-1 victory over Widener University in game one before dropping game two 7-6 Sunday at Widener Softball Field.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Stevens rallied from behind to pick up a win for the third time this season as they moved to 4-4 on the season.
"We had a much better offensive presence today," head coach
Emily Kaczmarek said. "We still have some growing pains to work out defensively, but we're looking forward to getting to work this week and putting the building blocks together."
With the Sunday split, the Ducks dropped three of the four games in the non-conference series with the total run differential in the first and the fourth contests sitting at just three runs.
In her fourth consecutive complete game effort, Masur (3-1) allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three to pick the victory in the circle and join Alexa McHugh of Misericordia as the only MAC Freedom pitcher with three wins to her ledger.
The Pride threatened to score in the second inning of the opening contest as a double and a single put runners on second and third with two away. Masur was able to get out of the frame unscathed, however, as she got a pop out to
Julia Baber to escape the jam.
With the score still knotted at 0-0 in the fourth, Widener managed to get on the board first after a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base and a squeeze play brought home a run.
The Ducks responded in the top half of the next inning, however, as
Amanda Delorme walked and
Madison Kidd singled to put runners on first and third with two away.
As she has done for much of her career, Schattin delivered in a big way with an RBI single to left field to bring home Delorme. Additionally, the left fielder was unable to field the ball cleanly and Kidd did not slow down rounding third as she came around to score on the error to make the score 2-1.
Given the one-run lead Masur was dominant in the final three innings, allowing just one hit and facing one batter over the minimum in the fifth, sixth and seventh to earn the win in the circle.
Meg Halloran, Baber,
Jessica Guerrero and Delorme all joined Schattin in the hit column for the Ducks in game one to snap the three-game losing skid.
In game number two of the doubleheader, Stevens got on the board first in the top half of the opening inning after Schattin singled, was moved to second on a sac bunt by
Gina DeOliveira and scored on a Halloran single and subsequent error by the Pride left fielder.
The Pride responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball, but
Erin Kreis limited the damage as she got a strikeout and a lineout to end the inning and strand a runner at third.
In the top of the third, Stevens had possibly their best offensive inning of the weekend as
Elise Fauske started the rally by reaching base on a leadoff error and moved to second on a sac bunt from Schattin.
One batter later, DeOliveira ripped an RBI single into left to score Fauske and give the Ducks the 2-1 lead.
After an error and a walk, the Ducks had runners on first and second with two away for Guerrero. The reigning MAC Freedom Player of the Week came through with an RBI single to left field to plate Halloran and push the edge to 3-1.
The rally did not end there as Delorme delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-RBI triple to center to give the Ducks a 5-1 advantage.
Widener was able to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI infield single and make it 5-2 headed to the fourth.
In the fifth Stevens re-extended the lead to four in the fifth after back-to-back singles from Halloran and Baber and a Pride fielding error on a sharply hit ground ball by Guerrero brought Halloran around from second to make it 6-2.
In the bottom half of the inning the Pride returned the favor as they got a leadoff double who raced home on a fielding error to cut it back to a three-run game.
After a double put runners on second and third with nobody out, Lindsey Cooper hit an infield single to bring home a run. One batter later, Widener used small ball as they did all weekend with a squeeze play to plate another and make it 6-5.
The Pride then took advantage of another error in the field by the Ducks one batter later to knot the score at six.
A flyout and a stolen base put a runner on second with two away in the inning, but Mikaela Lovell delivered the eventual game-winning RBI double to left to make it 7-6.
Stevens was unable to muster a rally in the final two innings and fell in the fourth and final game of the series.
With two more RBIs in game two, Guerrero now has nine on the year to lead the MAC Freedom in that category.
The Ducks return to the diamond and MAC Freedom play Saturday as they take on Delaware Valley at home at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on StevensDucks.com.
