HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 14, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team scored on each of its first three possessions en route to a 17-2 victory over Arcadia University Wednesday evening in a MAC Freedom matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Junior
Morgan Westerby earned the opening draw control to give Stevens the first possession of the game. Fifth-year
Emily Shanklin ended the possession 25 seconds later, using a beautiful individual move to net her 18th goal of the season.
The process was reversed one minute later. Shanklin corralled the second draw control of the game, with Westerby ending the possession with her eight goal of the season. Stevens extended its advantage to three on its third possession with Bednarski netting her 37th of the year after Westerby picked up her second draw control of the contest.
Bednarski and junior
Camryn Rogers each totaled four goals and an assist to lead the offense, while Shanklin scored three times for her third hat trick of the season. All totaled, seven different student-athletes found the back of the net for the Ducks, who improved to 5-4 on the year and to 4-2 in conference play.
Mackenzie Hoffman and Giovanna Raspanti each had a goal for Arcadia, who fell to 1-8 on the year and to 1-4 in conference play. The Knights have dropped four straight to Stevens.
"Great team win tonight," said head coach
Karen Shaddock. "I'm really happy with our performance."
"Emily and Kyra really stepped up as leaders tonight and controlled the offense," Shaddock continued. "Our defense was fantastic as well; we were able to make adjustments from the last game and put it all together."
Sophomore
Zoe Cook had a pair of goals and two assists, while first-year Emly Leiby also scored twice. Junior Natalie Fitzgerald found the back of the net for the eight time this season to round out the goal scorers. Sophomore
Maris Daly had two assists, with Fitzpatrick adding one to round out Stevens' offensive contributions.
"Maris and Morgan did a great job on the draw tonight," Shaddock said. "It created opportunities for Zoe, Morgan and
Emily Leiby that they were able to capitalize on."
Senior
Peyton Taylor started in goal and made one save to earn the victory. Junior
Lauren Cunniff took over at the start of the second half and made three saves. Mariya Occorso played all 60 minutes for Arcadia and stopped five shots.
"Our goalies played great tonight," Shaddock stated. "Defensively, Tara, Liv and Kayla led the group with a strong presence on the field, while
Sierra Doss,
Josie Cook and Nat all made a big impact on the field."
After Stevens opened a three-goal lead, Raspanti put Arcadia on the board with her eighth of the season, however the Ducks scored each of the next five goals to take an 8-1 lead into the intermission. Rogers would score twice during the stretch, including her first powerplay goal of the season, to complete her fourth straight hat trick.
Bednarski scored twice in a 1:15 span to open second half scoring and complete her seventh hat trick of the season. Shanklin would become the third Duck to collect a hat trick, netting her third of the evening midway through the stanza. Bednarski's five-point outing moved the Syracuse, New York native within 15 points of matching Hall of Famer Alyssa Pigott atop the program's career scoring list.
Leiby would score twice around Rogers' final goal of the game to provide the final margin of victory. Four of the Ducks' five wins on the season have come by double digits.
Stevens outshot Arcadia 30-7, with 22 of the Ducks' 30 attempts registering on net. Rogers led all student-athletes with nine shots, while Bednarski had six. Skylar Acker joined Hoffman in taking two shots apiece to lead Arcadia.
The Ducks forced the Knights into 26 turnovers, which is the second most by a Stevens opponent this season. Fifth-year
Tara Ravoli recorded a career-high four caused turnovers, while Rogers, Bednarski and junior
Josie Cook each caused two. Ten of Arcadia's 26 miscues were unforced. Five different student-athletes caused one turnover each to lead the Knights.
Arcadia held a slim 9-8 edge in draw controls, although Stevens had a 5-2 advantage in the first half. Westerby led the Ducks with four, while Shanklin added two. Kadley Kreider had four to pace Arcadia.
Stevens had a 23-11 advantage in ground balls, with Ravoli and
Josie Cook each picking up four.
Bednarski and
Zoe Cook each converted their free-position shots for the Ducks, who went 2 for 5 on eight-meter attempts. Raspanti had Arcadia's lone free-position goal of the game.
Up Next: Women's Lacrosse heads to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania for a MAC Freedom matchup with King's (Pa.) College on Apr. 17. It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
