WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 17, 2021) – Senior
Amanda Delorme ripped three doubles in two games including the game-winner in game one to help the Stevens Institute of Technology softball program earn a split against Arcadia University, winning game one 3-2 before dropping game two 9-4.
Delorme finished the doubleheader 3 for 5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored while
Jessie Masur was stellar once again as the Ducks moved to 14-6 overall and 13-3 in MAC Freedom play to remain in second place in the conference standings.
Arcadia, meanwhile, pushed its record to 15-5 and 12-4 in the MAC Freedom. The two teams remain in second and third, respectively, in the conference standings heading into the final Sunday doubleheader of the season.
"Tough split today," head coach
Emily Kaczmarek said. "We had some good at-bats but our discipline at the plate with runners in scoring position wasn't there as much as I would have liked to see. We're looking forward to getting after it tomorrow."
In the first contest of the day, Stevens also got a multi-hit effort from
Siobhan Cottell as well as RBIs from
Julia Baber and
Meg Halloran.
In the circle, Masur threw her 11th consecutive complete game to move to 10-1 on the year. In seven innings, the senior gave up just three hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out a pair to keep her earned run average at a miniscule 0.90.
Arcadia started the scoring in the top half of the first as Alex Destefano singled to lead off the game and a sacrifice bunt, an error and a stolen base put runners on second and third with nobody out.
Knights' three-hole hitter Alexis Burge then lifted a sacrifice fly to left and Megan Sooy followed it up with an RBI single up the middle to go ahead 2-0.
Masur truly settled in from there, as she got a groundout and a flyout to end the inning and allowed just one more hit the rest of the game.
The Ducks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Cottell hit a single and Delorme ripped her first double of the day into the right-centerfield gap to put runners on second and third with one out.
Baber then stepped to the plate and scored a run on an RBI groundout and Halloran followed with a two-out RBI single to left field to tie the game.
It was the combination of Cottell and Delorme doing damage once again in the bottom of the sixth as Cottell slapped a single through the left side lead off the inning.
After
Elise Fauske came on to pinch run and stole second to put a runner in scoring position, the Knights brought on Juliana Presto out of the bullpen, the MAC Freedom leader in ERA at 0.86.
Delorme was unfazed, however, stepped to the plate and promptly ripped a 2-2 pitch down the left field line to score Fauske and give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.
That was enough for Masur who sat down each of the last 16 batters she faced in the game to push the Ducks winning streak to seven at the time. She remains the leader in the conference in strikeouts (83), wins (10) and innings pitched (70) while sitting second in ERA (0.90) and opposing batting average (.162).
The win streak was snapped at seven in game two as the Ducks dropped a 9-4 decision in game two.
Stevens started the scoring in the bottom of the second as
Jessica Guerrero walked, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Delorme's third double of the day down the right field line.
Arcadia responded with a three-run inning in the top of the third as clean-up hitter Megan Sooy lifted a two-out three-run homer over the centerfield fence to make it 3-1.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth when the Knights added two more thanks to back-to-back singles, a double and a groundout to extend the edge to four.
The Ducks were able to cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom half of the inning. After Halloran singled and
Samantha Schattin was hit by a pitch,
Gina DeOliveira delivered an RBI single through the left side to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Knights' starter Brenna Dolan was able to dance out of danger, though, as she got a fielder's choice groundout, a strikeout and a foul out to escape with no more runs crossing the plate.
In the top half of the sixth, Arcadia tacked on four more in runs on an RBI single, an RBI groundout and a two-run homer off the bat of Alexis Burge to swell the lead to 9-2.
Stevens responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as an error and an RBI double off the bat of Schattin brought the deficit to five at 9-4.
Much like she did in game one, Presto came on in relief but was much more effective in the second contest as she retired each of the four batters she faced to help the Knights split the doubleheader.
Schattin, DeOliveira and Delorme all had RBIs in the contest while
Erin Kreis (4-5) was saddled with the loss after tossing a complete game, allowing nine runs on 14 hits.
With the doubleheader split, Stevens remains one game ahead of Arcadia in the conference standings as each team has four games remaining on the schedule.
The series concludes Sunday as the Ducks and Knights compete in a doubleheader in Glenside, Pa. starting at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on StevensDucks.com.
