Golf Downs Delaware Valley in Match Play Event

Labenski is top finisher for Ducks in first match play in 10 years

The Basics
  • The lead: The Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team defeated Delaware Valley University Monday in the first match play event for the program in over 10 years.
  • Score: Stevens (308), Delaware Valley (346)
  • Location: Lookaway Golf Club - Buckingham, Pa. (Par 72 - 6,650 yards)
  • Short Story: The Ducks claimed each of the four lowest scores on the day to defeat the Aggies by 38 strokes. The match was the first for the program since April 11, 2011 and was the next-to-last event before the MAC Freedom Championships.

The Finishes
  • Senior Luke Labenski carded the lowest score for the Ducks, finishing with a 76. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida native finished the day with three birdies and was even through the front nine.
  • Senior Vincent Cortese and sophomore Miles Philion each finished one shot back with sophomore Eegan McDermott finishing at six-over to round out the Ducks' countable total. McDermott produced four birdies to lead the team, while Cortese and Philion had two each.
  • Greg Gipe was the highest finisher for Delaware Valley, carding an 80 to finish four shots back. 
  • First-years Gus Vickers (80) and Joss Hindin (82) joined junior Eddie Sot and senior Dan O'Connor (89) rounded the Ducks' scores for the day.

  • "Happy with our first dual match in years on an excellent, but tough, venue. It was a tough walk, but our student-athletes came through."

Up Next
  • Golf heads to Mohnton, Pennsylvania tomorrow afternoon for the Alvernia Spring Invitational tomorrow. The Ducks are set to tee off at noon. This is the final event for the Ducks before the conference championship.
