Penalty Kick Sends Vassar over Women’s Soccer 1-0

Ducks fall to Brewers on penalty kick in 29th minute

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 21, 2021)  – Despite controlling play for the majority of the match, a single moment proved to be the difference Tuesday evening as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to Vassar College 1-0, in a non-conference match played at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

After a corner kick in the 29th minute, Vassar's Skylar Herrera-Ross was making her way through the 18-yard box in an attempt to haul in a looping ball that was played in by Jessica Young. Herrera-Ross appeared to get tangled up with a Stevens defender and fell to the ground. A yellow card was issued and a penalty kick was awarded.

Herrera-Ross converted the ensuing penalty into the bottom right corner of the net for the lone goal of the match as Vassar won its second straight to move to 4-2.

Stevens, who outshot Vassar by a nearly 6-1 ratio, fell to 1-4-1. The contest marked the ninth straight meeting between the teams in Hoboken. The Ducks continue to lead the all-time series 10-5-1.

Trailing by one, Stevens applied heavy pressure on the Brewers at the start of the second half, including consecutive near-misses by sophomore Amelia Rehrig and junior Louise Gottwald. Perhaps the Ducks' best chance of the night came in the 54th minute, when first-year Olivia Castro was inches away from tying the match after touching a gorgeous Kaitlyn Casiano through ball right off the left post.

Julia Reigrut had eight saves to earn the victory for Vassar. Senior Izzy DiDario had one stop for the Ducks.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 17-3 edge in shots, including an 11-2 margin in the second half.
  • Of the Ducks' 17 attempts, eight were on goal. Two of the three Brewer attempts were on frame.
  • After each side earned one corner in the opening half, the Ducks collected three corners in the second half to finish with a 4-2 advantage in the statistic.
  • A physical second half produced 16 combined fouls and a pair of yellow cards for Vassar.
  • Castro drew her first collegiate start.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
  • "Seems like we just played this match on Saturday, honestly. This is the game: it will test you, it will make you suffer, it will make you think that the whole world is against you. But, we are the lucky ones to even be given the opportunity to compete, to step into the arena, to make the effort and to strive together. Our thoughts are with our injured teammates. Yes, we all find ourselves in a different world than we did yesterday, but it's up to us if we are going to choose the path that leads us forward."

Up Next
