Eadie Ends It! Eadie’s Double Overtime Goal Sends Field Hockey to 3-2 Comeback win Over Cabrini

Ducks win fourth straight game to improve to 5-2 overall

RADNOR, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2021) – With the score tied 2-2 and just over two minutes left to play in the second overtime period, Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey senior Kila Eadie raced down the middle of the field and fired a shot from just inside the circle that raced past the goalkeeper and gave the Ducks a thrilling 3-2 double overtime comeback win over Cabrini University Tuesday at ER Dixon Field.

Eadie, who is now tied for second on the team with three goals this season, possessed the ball from just outside the box and was able to juke a defender before letting off the shot that helped move Stevens to 5-2 on the year and push its winning streak to four straight games.

The Ducks fell behind 2-0 after Cabrini's Kelly Sweeney and Caroline Gallagher both scored within two minutes of each other in the first period. It was the third time in the last four games that the Ducks had to rally after allowing the opposition to score the first goal of the contest.

With the score 2-0 in the 27th minute just before halftime, the Ducks were able to get on the board when junior Lynda Farinella intercepted a pass in the midfield, beat two defenders and ripped a backhanded shot into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

Farinella becomes the 10th student-athlete to score for Stevens this season and now has two career goals to her ledger after scoring her first in the 2019 season.

Then in the 50th minute, Stevens was able to find the equalizer when junior Natalie Logan found senior Alyssa Appleby in front of the cage and Appleby was able to finish to tie things up at 2-2.

Appleby has now score in back-to-back games and has netted four goals in her last eight collegiate contests dating back to the 2019 season. Logan, meanwhile, is now alone in second place on the team with three assists on the year.

There were some nervous moments in both overtime periods for the Ducks as the Cavaliers were able to force five penalty corners in OT and allowed just one to the Ducks who came into the game ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III in penalty corners per game.

Perhaps the biggest moment defensively for Stevens came in the 74th minute of the second overtime when senior goalkeeper Emily Franco had to make back-to-back saves, one of which came on a diving attempt just in front of net, within three seconds of one another to keep the game tied.

Eadie then delivered in the 78th minute to send the Ducks to their third overtime victory of the season. Overall, Stevens has won six of its last seven contest that went to extra time dating back to 2019.

Inside the Numbers
  • Franco was a wall in goal for the Ducks after the first quarter, making seven saves, four of which came in overtime. She is now 9-2 in overtime games in her illustrious collegiate career.
  • Cabrini did a fantastic job limiting penalty corner opportunities for Stevens as they held the Ducks to just four in the game, their lowest total of the season.
  • Conversely, the Cavaliers racked up a total of 16 penalty corner opportunities, converting on one for their first goal of the contest.
  • Stevens is now 3-1 in one-score games this season with all three wins coming by the score of 3-2.
  • Senior Brynn Froehlich led the team with four shots while Eadie was second with three of her own.
  • Stevens held a narrow 14-13 edge in total shots while Cabrini grabbed a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The 5-2 start is now the best start in the six-year tenure of head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
  • "Wow! What a day for the Ducks. I'm so proud of the comeback that this team has showed time and time again. After a slow first quarter, we really clicked in and stayed the course. A lot of people had excellent games, but Lynda Farinella and Kila Eadie were exceptional from start to finish. This momentum will certainly help us get ready to go back to conference play this weekend."
