No. 14 Women’s Soccer Blanks Clarkson 2-0 for First Victory of the Season

Abusada and Castro score as Ducks earn shutout victory to close out North Country Classic

POTSDAM, N.Y. (September 5, 2021)  – Junior Catalina Abusada broke through in the 19th minute and three goalkeepers combined for a two-save shutout as No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer defeated Clarkson University 2-0 Sunday in a non-conference fixture at Hantz Turf Field. The match closed out play in the North Country Classic.

First-year Olivia Castro also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who evened their record at 1-1. Molly DiCaprio had five saves in a losing effort for Clarkson, who fell to 2-1. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

After drawing the opening-day start, Abusada entered Sunday's contest in the 17th minute and made an immediate impact, beating DiCaprio less than 150 seconds later. The scoring play began near midfield when the Ducks were able to send a goal kick back into the offensive end of the field. Sophomore Amelia Rehrig collected the ball and turned a ball towards Abusada, who was moving down the left flank. The Berkeley Heights, New Jersey native reeled in the pass and flicked the ball back across the field and into the top-right corner of the net for her third career goal.

A strong defensive effort held Clarkson to five shots on the afternoon, marking the lowest total for the program since the Golden Knights took just four attempts in a 1-0 loss at Skidmore College on Sept. 25, 2018. Clarkson began the day with 72 shots in their first two matches. Senior IzzyDiDario stopped Angelina Fahrenkrug's try in the third minute and sophomore Dana Perry snagged Chloe Hodge's shot in the 77th minute to preserve the shutout. Stevens posted 11 clean sheets in 2019.

Turning Point
  • Like Abusada, Castro would provide an offensive spark off the bench, scoring with just 41 seconds left in the opening half to provide the Ducks with a two-goal advantage at halftime. The Littleton, Colorado native had entered the contest in the 36th minute.
  • Graduate student Madison Starr sent a crossing ball to Castro, who found herself open in a dangerous area. Castro had time to receive the pass and calmly tucked the ball into the left side of the goal for the Ducks' second tally of the afternoon.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot Clarkson, 13-5, including an 8-2 margin in the first half. Seven of the Ducks' 13 shots were on goal.
  • The Ducks held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Ducks held the hosting Golden Knights with a corner in the first half.
  • Rehrig joined classmate Elsa Bley in drawing their first collegiate starts.
  • Perry and first-year Zoe Hindman would split time in net in the second half to make their collegiate debuts.
  • First-years Abby Harris and Julianna Villela also saw their first career action.
  • Starr's helper on Castro's first-half marker was the back's third career point, first since Aug. 25, 2019, and first as a Duck.
  • DiDario continues to march towards 100 career saves. Her first-half save was the 96th of her career. She is aiming to become the seventh student-athlete in program history to reach the milestone.

Unsung Heroes
  • The defensive group kept Clarkson's leading scorers: Fahrenkrug and Sarah Kohls off the scoresheet. The pair had combined for four goals on 15 shots entering the contest and Stevens held the duo to just one shot.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
  • "We were really happy with our first-half performance and that led to our positive result today. Clarkson has had a good start to the season and we're sure that it is likely to continue. We focused on a few key areas from yesterday. Moving forward, we need to keep working together to improve ourselves, our environment and our game. Looking forward to a challenging weekend ahead."

From the Sidelines - Graduate Student Kaitlyn Casiano
  • "I'm proud of the way our team bounced back from yesterday's loss. I think we connected well and I'm glad we found the back of the net. It's only up from here for us."
