HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 12, 2022) – Junior
Amelia Rehrig netted her second career hat trick as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team defeated Delaware Valley University 7-3 Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Graduate student
Rachel Rouse, who was named the United Soccer Coaches College Division III Player of the Week earlier in the day, finished with a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who won their fourth straight match to improve to 5-5-3 on the year and to a perfect 4-0 in league play. Stevens improved to 4-0 all-time against Delaware Valley. The Ducks' seven-goal output marked the most in a single match for the team since Nov. 12, 2016, when the Ducks defeated Colby-Sawyer 8-0 in an NCAA opening-round matchup.
Gillian Baker scored twice and Jess Williamson also found the back of the net for Delaware Valley, who fell to 6-6-1 on the year and to 0-4 in the MAC Freedom. The Aggies have dropped four straight.
Sophomore
Zoe Hindman earned the victory in goal for the Ducks after taking over for junior
Dana Perry in the second half. Perry stopped a pair of shots in 45 first-half minutes. Olivia Sherwood matched a career high with 23 saves in a losing effort for Delaware Valley.
After creating comfortable first-half margins over their last two matches, the Ducks found themselves in an early deficit, when Wiliamson scored an opportunistic goal in the 10th minute. Marley Bramsway collected a free kick and sent a shot towards the goal that was blocked by a Stevens defender. The ball carried to Williamson, who slotted the ball into the left side of the goal to give the Aggies an early advantage.
Stevens applied heavy pressure to the Delaware Valley backline, peppering nine shots in the game's first six minutes, while also earning three corners. Rehrig broke through in the 18th minute, heading a cross from first-year
Sarah Wnorowski into the corner of the goal for her sixth goal of the year. She would add her second of the night in the 25th minute, tapping in a cross from graduate student
Fiona Matthews to draw the Ducks even at two after Baker scored on a direct kick to put the guests back in front in the 23th minute.
In the second half, junior
Elsa Bley pounced on a loose ball outside the 18 and sent a blast into the net for her first marker of the season to put the Ducks in front for good. Rehrig completed her second hat trick of the year moments later, finishing a well-placed through ball from Rouse to push the Ducks' lead to 5-2. Sophomore
Abby Harris knocked in her own rebound and graduate student
Taylor Whitlock scored on a splendid pass from junior
Elaine Kooiker to surround Baker's second goal of the evening to provide the final margin of victory.
The Ducks were firing on all cylinders offensively, finishing with a season high 45 shots - 30 on target. Conversely, the Ducks didn't allow the Aggies any breathing room and conceded just five shots on the evening, including just one in the second half.
Turning Point
- Bley netted her second career goal in the 54th minute. The Puyallup, Washington native drove a ball towards the goal from well beyond the 18. Sherwood jumped and made contact with the strike, but the ball still trickled across the line to put the Ducks in front for good.
Unsung Hero
- Harris netted her first career goal in the 62nd minute. The Las Vegas, Nevada native initially headed a service, but Sherwood pushed aside the try. The ball caromed back to Harris, who drove it into the back of the net.
