Women’s Volleyball Returns to Winning Ways with Four-Set Victory Over Drew

Ducks top Rangers in first meeting between the programs

MADISON, N.J. (October 13, 2022)  – Junior Liz Patterson posted her sixth career double-double with 13 kills and a career-high 24 digs to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (27-25, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19) victory over Drew University Thursday in a non-conference match at Baldwin Gymnasium.

First-year Gabbi Roberts set new career highs with 20 assists and 20 digs for her career double-double and graduate student Kathleen Riegner also dished out 20 assists for the Ducks, who improved to 16-6 on the year. The match marked the first meeting between the programs.

Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro finished with a match-high 21 kills for Drew, who dropped to 10-10. The Rangers have dropped five of their last six matches.

Patterson had a strong defensive effort in the marathon first set, amassing nine of her 20 digs in the frame. Offensively, the Midland Park, New Jersey native turned in her best performance in the third set, setting down five kills on nine swings with just one error (.444 attack percentage). She has recorded at least eight kills in each of her last six matches.

The early portion of the opening set was a tale of runs, as the Ducks scored the first eight points of the match, only for the hosts to respond with six straight points. An error pushed the Ducks' advantage to 13-10, but Drew reeled off the next four points to take their first lead of the contest. See-saw play saw the teams draw even at 24 before an attack error handed Drew its first set point. However, sophomore Cleo Shannon propelled the Ducks, connecting for three straight kills to give Stevens the opening set.

The second set saw Drew jump in front on a kill by Ashley Carkhuff, but the Ducks reeled off four straight points - two courtesy of kills by junior Meg Dion - to jump in front. Neither team could create any significant separation until the Ducks took advantage of three Drew errors to take a 23-19 lead. Patterson knocked down a Roberts set to bring the Ducks to set point and an attack error closed out the frame.

Looking to close out the match, Stevens again jumped in front in the early going with Shannon and sophomore Parker Adkins notching kills as the Ducks opened a 4-0 lead. The Ducks would open up as much as an eight-point lead before Drew climbed back into the match, finally drawing even at 14. A pair of kills from Patterson and one from junior Elle Maggio gave Stevens a 20-17 lead. A double block by Shannon and senior Ava Smithing propelled the Ducks to match point, but Drew scored the next four points to jump in front 25-24 and a Carkhuff ace closed out the frame for the Rangers.

In the final set, it was Smithing that paced the offense, registering four kills on seven swings without an error (.571 attack percentage). As a team, the Ducks turned in their best statistical performance, finishing with their best attack percentage of the night. Five different Ducks notched kills and a 5-0 run midway through the frame put Stevens in front for good. Shannon set down a pass from sophomore libero Bailey Axelrad to secure the victory.
