Women’s Volleyball Clinches Top Seed in MAC Freedom Tournament with Five-Set Victory Over Arcadia

Patterson posts eighth double-double as Ducks rally to top Knights

GLENSIDE, Pa. (October 27, 2022)  – Nine unanswered points in the deciding fifth powered the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team past Arcadia University 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 15-11) Thursday night in a MAC Freedom matchup at Alumni Gymnasium.

Junior Liz Patterson turned in her eighth career double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 22 digs and first-year Vivian Lisboa added 12 kills and a career-high seven blocks for the Ducks, who won their second straight to improve to 20-9 on the year and a perfect 8-0 in conference play. With the victory, the Ducks finished atop the MAC Freedom and secured the top seed in the league's postseason tournament.

The Ducks' quest for a third straight MAC Freedom title begins Wednesday, Nov. 2 inside Canavan Arena, when Stevens takes on the winner of Monday's play-in match between DeSales and FDU-Florham.

Estefania Martinez-Sola and Michelle Frank each notched a double-double to lead Arcadia, who saw its two-match winning streak come to an end. The Knights are locked into the second seed in the postseason tournament, hosting Misericordia on Nov. 2. The Cougars climbed into the third seed after sweeping DeSales earlier in the evening.

After winning the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth set, the Ducks jumped in front on kills by Patterson and junior Elle Maggio to take an early lead. Maggio was an efficient 3-0-4 in the final frame. The Knights responded with three straight points to take their first lead of the set and the hosts pushed their lead to as many as three in the final frame before the Ducks got on track.

The match-clinching sequence began with Patterson setting down a feed from senior Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar. The Midland Park, New Jersey native recorded five of her 17 kills in the final set, matching Arcadia's total in the frame. By the time the Ducks were finished, they had forced five Arcadia errors during the 9-0 run, three of which were courtesy of double blocks by Lisboa and senior Ava Smithing.

Lisboa's second kill of the set brought the Ducks to match point and Patterson knocked down another Enkhbayar feed to close out the match. The victory secured the Ducks' ninth straight season with 20 or more victories and the come-from-behind win moved Stevens to 6-2 in five-set matches this season.

Stevens had its best statistical performance in the final set, hitting .226 (10-3-31), while holding Arcadia to just 5-4-29. Across the final two sets, the Ducks held the Knights to a negative attack percentage (11-12-60), while also recording three total blocks.

The Ducks forced a deciding set after leading wire-to-wire in the fourth set. Patterson began the scoring by converting a set from graduate student Kathleen Riegner and the Ducks scored nine of the first 10 points to build a commanding lead.A double block by Patterson and Lisboa sparked another lengthy run that brought Stevens to set point and a setting error drew the Ducks even.
