FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (November 11, 2022) – Junior
Elle Maggio had a team-high six kills, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-10) setback to Johns Hopkins University in an NCAA second round match hosted by the University of Mary Washington at its William M. Anderson Center.
Junior
Liz Patterson added five kills and a pair of aces for the Ducks, who closed out a successful season with a 24-10 record.
Simone Adam recorded a match-high 12 kills, while Alice Yu had five blocks for the Blue Jays, who won their 13th straight to improve to 23-7 on the year. Johns Hopkins advanced to face either Mary Washington or Eastern, who will play in the final match of the day.
Back-to-back errors gave the Ducks the first two points of the match and Stevens would open a 6-3 lead after Patterson knocked down an overpass. However, Hopkins responded with an 8-1 run to take its first lead. Patterson converted a set from graduate student Kathleeen Riegner to return serve to Stevens and then served consecutive aces to pull the Ducks back to within one at 11-10.
A 7-1 run gave the Blue Jays an 18-11 lead and the teams alternated two-point swings, which brought Johns Hopkins to set point. Brooklyn Pater set down a feed from Helena Swaak to close out the opening frame.
Junior
Meg Dion scored the first point of the second set, successfully converting a pass from Riegner. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native finished with three kills. The lead was short-lived, however, as Johns Hopkins would score five unanswered points to jump back in front and then added a 13-point run to break the set open. Stevens tried to claw back into the set with four straight points, including an ace from sophomore
Bailey Axelrad, but the Blue Jays scored three of the final four points in the frame to take a two-set lead.
The final set saw the Ducks take an early lead after kills from Dion and first-year
Vivian Lisboa. Maggio knocked down a Riegner feed to make it 3-2 in favor of the Ducks, but Hopkins scored three straight to jump in front for good. Stevens would be the recipient of consecutive errors to pull within two, but the Blue Jays responded with eight straight to break the set open. Hopkins would go on to score the final six points of the final set to close out the match.
