Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season with 21-4 Victory Over Farmingdale State

Rogers nets six, Cook adds four, as Ducks earn double-digit victory to open 2022 campaign

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (February 26, 2022)  – Senior Camryn Rogers had six goals and junior Zoe Cook added four as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Farmingdale State 21-4 Saturday in a non-conference contest at the Rams' Lacrosse Complex.

Senior Maeve McGovern had two goals and an assist and first-year Alison Lax totaled four points in her collegiate debut for the Ducks, who moved to 1-0. The 21-goal output was the most in an opening day victory for the program since the Ducks poured in 22 in a victory over Centenary (22-0) on Mar. 6, 2002 and marks the second-most goals scored in a season opener in program history.

Senior Natalie Fitzpatrick and first-year Emily Smart each totaled a goal and two assists as 10 different student-athletes found the scoresheet. Senior Morgan Westerby and junior Maddie Schmidt each scored twice and sophomore Emily Leiby added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Carly Walker scored once to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Athena Vogiatzis and Alyssa Guerra each scored twice for Farmingdale State, who fell to 0-1. The victory moved Stevens to 6-1 all-time against the Rams, including victories in each of the last two meetings. The Ducks' victory snapped Farmingdale's 10-game winning streak, which dates back to Mar. 7, 2020.

Senior Lauren Cunniff drew the start and made two saves to earn the victory. First-year Erica Strojny came on in relief at the start of the fourth quarter to make her collegiate debut. Strojny was one of six Ducks to make their first appearance representing Stevens, joining Lax, Smart and fellow first-years Erica Schug, Marie Lindberger and Rebecca Guerra. Ronnie Reilly made eight saves in defeat for Farmingdale.

Lax netted the Ducks' first goal of the 2022 season just 99 seconds into the opening quarter. Vogiatzis answered to tie the game at one, but the Ducks closed out the first quarter with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead into the second period. Westerby's second goal of the day came with just nine seconds left in the stanza.

Megan Diamond received a yellow card with three seconds left in the first quarter and the Ducks capitalized early in the second. Rogers took a Smart feed and fired a shot that easily beat Reilly into the corner of the cage for her third power-play goal as a Duck. Cook followed with her first of the year to make it 7-1 before Farmingdale netted a pair of goals less than a minute apart to cut into the Ducks' lead.

Rogers answered the Rams' run with a pair of markers 90 seconds apart to complete the hat trick. The Branchburg, New Jersey native had seven hat tricks one season ago. Guerra netted her second of the game to slow down Stevens a bit, but the Ducks did not allow another goal to the home team over the remainder of the contest in posting the double-digit victory. Rogers and McGovern beat Reilly to start the stretch and Cook completed her hat trick one second before halftime to send the teams into the intermission with Stevens holding a 12-4 lead.

The Ducks would score three times in the third quarter and six more in the fourth to close out the victory.

Stevens finished with a decisive 39-6 edge in shots, including a 15-0 advantage in the second half. The Ducks registered 29 of their 39 attempts on goal, while all six of the Rams' attempts were on frame. Cook took nine shots to lead the Ducks, while Rogers added seven. Vogiatzis and Guerra each took two shots to pace Farmingdale.

Westerby keyed the Ducks defensive efforts, causing four of the Rams' 23 turnovers. The Ducks totaled 14 caused turnovers on the afternoon and the Rams committed nine unforced miscues. The Ducks committed 14 turnovers over the four quarters, with Farmingdale State causing six of them.

The Ducks won 18 of the game's 28 draw controls. Rogers led the efforts by winning six draws, while Cook added four. Leiby earned three and Westerby added two. Fitzpatrick had one to round out the Ducks' efforts. Diamond earned three draws to pace Farmingdale. Interestingly enough, Stevens was awarded possession on the first draw control of the game, and of the season, under the new alternating possession rule after a double foul was whistled.

Fitzpatrick led the team with four ground balls as the Ducks picked up 23 on the day against just nine for the Rams. Westerby added three ground balls, while Lax, Schug and Preseason All-American Meredith Conlin each picked up two.

Farmingdale State was carded six times, leading to five power-play goals. Rogers, Cook (2), Leiby and Schmidt each scored on the woman-advantage. The Ducks were carded on two separate occasions, with Guerra's second-quarter tally coming on the woman-advantage.

Stevens went 13 for 14 on clearing attempts, while Farmingdale was successful just eight times on 16 attempts.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse heads to Union, New Jersey on Mar. 2 for a matchup with Kean. The Ducks and Cougars have met 10 times in program history, with Stevens victorious in each of the meetings. Links for live stats and video are available on StevensDucks.com.
