Women’s Lacrosse Downs Cabrini for Seventh Straight Win

Rogers and Cook combine for 14 goals as Ducks win seventh straight game

RADNOR, Pa. (March 19, 2022)  – Senior Camryn Rogers and junior Zoe Cook combined for 14 goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Cabrini University 22-13 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Rogers finished with a career-high eight goals and also added an assist, while Cook finished with six as nine different players recorded at least one point for the Ducks, who won their seventh straight in moving to 7-0. The seven-game winning streak to open the season is the best start for the program since 2009, when the Ducks reeled off a program-record 15 wins to begin the year en route to an ECAC Metro/South Championship.

Senior Maeve McGovern finished with two goals and an assist and first-year Emily Smart had a goal and three helpers for Stevens, whose 22-goal output matches the second-highest single-game total in program history. Senior Morgan Westerby added two goals and an assist and first-year Alison Lax dished out a pair of assists. Senior Natalie Fitzpatrick joined sophomore Emily Leiby and junior Maddie Schmidt in scoring once to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions.

"I am so proud of this team and how much trust they have in each other and our systems," head coach Karen Shaddock said. "We played together today and came up with a big win."

Dana Carlson led Cabrini with two goals and four assists and Olivia Little added two goals and two assists for the Cavaliers, who dropped their fifth straight in falling to 2-5. Formerly annual opponents between 2007 and 2010, today's meeting was the first since Apr. 21, 2010 and the Ducks' nine-goal victory moved Stevens to 4-2 all-time against the Cavaliers, including wins in each of the last four meetings.

"Meredith and Erica led the defense, Cunniff had some huge saves and showed such composure under pressure," Shaddock commented. "Cam, Morgan, Leiby and Nat were great on the draw, making adjustments throughout the game and the draws were huge today."

Senior Lauren Cunniff drew the start and finished with 11 saves to earn the victory. The Montgomery, New Jersey native has posted five straight games with double-digit saves. Sam Hamalak started for Cabrini and made five saves in defeat. Abbey Fenton relieved Hamalak in the third quarter and allowed seven goals without recording a save.

It was Cabrini that jumped on the board first, with a pair of goals in the first four minutes. Rogers had the answer for the Ducks, scoring twice in a 25-second span to draw the teams even. Following Rogers' first goal, the Branchburg, New Jersey native corralled the draw control to keep momentum with the Ducks and Leiby scooped up a key ground ball after a free-position shot.

Neve Murphy put Cabrini back in front, however, the Ducks scored nine unanswered goals to seize control of the game. Westerby began the onslaught midway through the first quarter with Cook scoring the final goal of the run late in the second. All totaled, six different players scored during the sequence, with Cook and Rogers each netting multiple goals. Ashley Tutzauer and Olivia Pace scored for Cabrini to slow down the Duck offense, but Rogers netted her fifth goal of the first half to send the teams into the intermission with Stevens holding a 12-5 lead.

"Our offense is so dynamic and we had so many threats on the field," Shaddock commented. "Cam and Zoe did a great job finding the back of the net and Maddie, Emily Smart and Maeve did a great job stepping up when we needed them."

Cabrini would open the third quarter by scoring three straight goals, including a short-handed tally by Caroline Gallagher. The Ducks would respond in a big way with consecutive power-play goals by Leiby and Schmidt to open up a six-goal advantage. The Cavaliers scored the final two goals of the third period to trim the Ducks' lead to five, but the Ducks opened the fourth quarter with four goals in less than three minutes to again put a comfortable cushion between the teams. Rogers scored twice during the stretch and added another tally in the waning minutes of the quarter to reach eight, surpassing her previous career best of seven, achieved twice last season.

Each team would score three times over the final minutes to produce the final score. Cook's final-minute goal closed out the scoring.

Free-position shots proved to be a key statistic on the afternoon, with the Ducks converting 7 of their 11 attempts, while Cabrini was unsuccessful on all five of its attempts. Rogers (3 for 3), Westerby (1 for 1) and Fitzpatrick (1 for 1) led the efforts, while Smart (1 for 2) and Cook (1 for 2) also scored from eight meters. Cunniff saved three of the Cavaliers five free-position attempts with the other two sailing wide.

The Ducks forced 16 Cabrini turnovers including five each in the second and fourth quarters. First-year Erica Schug registered three caused turnovers on the day, while junior Lauren Malicki had two. Tutzauer and McClintock each caused two turnovers each to lead Cabrini.

Rogers also led the Ducks' efforts on the draw, earning a career-high 10 draw controls, helping the Ducks gain a 24-15 advantage in the key statistic. Westerby matched a career-high with eight, while Leiby added three. Fitzpatrick finished with two draw controls, while senior Josie Cook had one to round out the Ducks' efforts. Tutzauer had seven to lead Cabrini.

The Ducks had a slim 19-17 advantage in ground balls. Cunniff scooped up five, while senior Meredith Conlin finished with three, as eight different players picked up at least one. Little picked up six to lead both teams.

The Ducks were successful on 18 of 22 clears, while Cabrini found success on 16 of its 17 attempts.

Stevens successfully killed off its lone card of the day, while also successfully converting on each of Cabrini's two cards.
