Women’s Lacrosse Tripped Up By Stevenson

Rogers nets four goals but Ducks fall to Mustangs

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 26, 2022)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology scored three times in the fourth quarter, but was unable to get past Stevenson University 13-11 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Camryn Rogers scored four times and senior Natalie Fitzpatrick and sophomore Emily Leiby each scored twice for the Ducks, who saw their season-opening eight-game winning streak come to an end.

Caroline Murphy had five goals and Kara Yarusso and Kaitlyn Kozlowski each scored twice for the Mustangs, who evened their record at 4-4. Stevenson leads the all-time series 3-2.

Junior Zoe Cook joined senior Morgan Westerby and junior Maddie Schmidt in finding the back of the net for the Ducks, who saw eight different student-athletes find the scoresheet. First-year Emily Smart and junior Julieann Murphy each recorded an assist to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Senior Lauren Cunniff made 11 saves in the cage for the Ducks. The Montgomery, New Jersey native has stopped double digit shots in six of her last seven contests. Sophie Shucosky had eight saves to earn the victory for Stevenson.

After lightning delayed the start of the game, it was the Ducks that came on firing. Fitzpatrick netted her 11th of the year two minutes into play to give Stevens an early lead. Rogers doubled the lead less than a minute later, finding the back of the net for the 37th time. Between the goals, Westerby kept possession for the Ducks, scoring the first of her four draw controls.

A second lightning alert halted play shortly after Rogers' first goal of the day and the break in play proved to be a turning point in the contest because when play resumed, the Mustangs scored a pair of goals 13 seconds apart. Murphy's first goal of the game put Stevenson on the board and Kozlowski followed with her 10th of the year on the Mustangs' next possession.

The teams would exchange goals through the remainder of the first half to enter the intermission deadlocked at seven. Murphy scored for the fourth time to open third-quarter scoring, before Rogers completed her seventh hat trick 90 seconds later to again draw the teams even.

Stevenson would score four unanswered goals to take a 12-8 lead, but the Ducks scored the first three goals of the final period to trim their deficit to just one. Schmidt kicked off the scoring with her 11th of the year and was followed by tallies from Rogers and Leiby.

After Leiby's free-position goal, Fitzpatrick earned the ensuing draw control to return possession to the Ducks, but a foul was called against the Ducks and Stevenson successfully cleared the ball and added a key insurance goal with just over three minutes left in regulation.

Fitzpatrick again corralled the draw control to give the Ducks a fighting chance, but Shucosky recorded two saves in the final two-and-a-half minutes to preserve Stevenson's victory.

The Ducks forced 11 Mustang turnovers, with senior Meredith Conlin causing two to lead the Ducks. Kozlowski registered three caused turnovers to lead Stevenson.

The teams were closely matched on the draw, with Stevens holding a 15-13 edge. Rogers and Westerby each had four draw controls to lead the way, while Fitzpatrick, Leiby and Conlin each had one. Murphy had three to lead Stevenson.

Stevenson had a 15-10 edge in ground balls. Kozlowski led the Mustangs' efforts with three, while Cunniff had three to lead the Ducks.

The Ducks were perfect clearing the ball, finishing 16 for 16. Stevenson was successful on 15 of its 17 attempts.

A key statistic in the contest was the conversion of free-position shots, with the Ducks scoring on four of their 10 attempts, while Stevenson went 2 for 6. Rogers went 2 for 3 from eight meters, while Leiby and Cook added one each. Kozlowski and Mary Marc had free-position goals for the Mustangs.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse welcomes DeSales to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Mar. 30. The contest is the third of a four-game homestand. The teams have met just once in their histories, with the Ducks topping the Bulldogs 18-3 in Center Valley last April.
