MONTCLAIR, N.J. (March 30, 2022) – Despite received a pair of strong pitching performances, the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a pair of game in a non-conference doubleheader against Montclair State Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Softball Stadium.

Erin Kreis (1-4) allowed just one earned run over six innings as the Ducks dropped the opener to 4-1. First-year
Kaitlin Smith (1-3) scattered eight hits over six innings as the Ducks fell to the Red Hawks 3-0 in the nightcap. Montclair's sweep left Stevens with a 2-8 record.
Kalya Cosentinio had three hits and an RBI for Montclair State, who improved to 15-5. The doubleheader is believed to be the first all-time meeting between the programs.

The first game of the day was scoreless through the first four innings until the Ducks broke through in the fifth. Senior
Lexi Gregule drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single, scoring sophomoreÂ
Julia Baber to give Stevens a 1-0 lead. Baber had waled amd moved to third on a pair of wild pitches.
The Red Hawks responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump in front for the first time. Amber Reed had the big blow in the inning, scoring a pair with double down the left-field line. A fielding error on Alyssa Boroz's sacrifice bunt attempt led to two of the four runs becoming unearned.Â

Kreis fired her fourth complete game of the season, striking out three. The Catonsville, Maryland native allowed just two hits over the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
Ali Cavallaro (9-3) earned the complete-game victory for the Red Hawks. She allowed a run of four hits, while striking out 10, to earn the victory.Â

The second game saw all three Montclair State runs come in the third inning. The Red Hawks strung together four straight hits off Smith (1-3) to score three times, Danielle Sibio delivered the big blow in the inning with a seeing-eye single down the right-field line to score a pair of runs.
Stevens threatened in the fourth, when sophomore
Madison Kidd won an eight-pitch battle with Kayla Volante (7-1), reaching on two-out single in the hole. However, sophomore
Carolyn Yahn lined out sharply to first to end the frame.
Volante earned the win, scattering three hits and striking out six. Smith finished with four punchouts and only walked one.

Baber finished the day 3 for 6 across the two contests.Â

Up Next: Stevens hosts King's College, Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Waterfront Park. It will be the first MAC Freedom action of the season for the Ducks. Stevens was victorious in three of the four meetings between the teams one season ago.
