Women’s Lacrosse’s Gritty Effort Earns Win Over Rowan

Rogers helps fuel third quarter comeback netting three goals as Ducks overtake Profs with five unanswered goals

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 5, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter to turn a 7-4 halftime deficit around en route to a 12-9 victory over Rowan University Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Camryn Rogers paced the offense with six goals, three of which came in the decisive third period, and senior Morgan Westerby finished with two goals and two assists for the Ducks, who moved to 3-0 on the year, marking the best start for the program since 2017.

Elise Cohen led Rowan with three goals and Ashley Lechliter, Molly Green, and Shannen Sterner tallied two points each for Rowan, who dropped to 1-2. Stevens moved to 12-7 all-time against the Profs and Saturday's triumph snapped Rowan's three-game winning streak in the series.

First-year Emily Smart handed out three assists, marking the third straight game that she's had at least one helper. Junior Zoe Cook, senior Maeve McGovern, junior Maddie Schmidt and first-year Alison Lax each scored once to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Senior Lauren Cunniff earned the win between the pipes for the Ducks collecting 10 big saves to earn the win. Reilly Shaup made 14 saves in taking the loss for Rowan.

This was a back-and-forth, hard fought game by both teams right from the start. Rowan opened the scoring with just under six minutes left in the first quarter thanks to an unassisted goal by Sterner. The Ducks responded with the first goal of the day from Rogers, assisted by Smart. This capped the scoring for the first quarter as the two teams went to the break tied 1-1.

Trailing at halftime, Stevens came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders and completely shifted the course of the game back in their favor. Specifically, the Ducks scored five times after the intermission, three from Rogers and one each from Westerby to jump back in front 9-7. Rowan did not fold, however, as they tied things back up at nine, with consecutive goals from Cohan and Lechliter over a 50-second span in the final period.

From that point forth it was all Stevens. Rogers put the Ducks back in front with her fifth of the day, and then added an insurance goal three minutes later to give Stevens an 11-9 lead. Schmidt would score on the powerplay to produce the game's final margin.

After the teams traded goals in the opening period, Rowan scored twice early in the second to jump in front. Stevens responded with two goals of their own, one from Lax, coming on the woman-advantage and the other coming from Westerby assisted from Smart. The momentum shifted back to Rowan, when Jamie Cutrera and Green each scored unassisted goals. But Cook responded for the Ducks less than two minutes later to pull Stevens within one. Rowan then extended their lead to 7-4 heading into halftime, scoring two goals in the final minute of play of the second quarter.

Senior Josie Cook was huge for the Ducks defensively all day causing a game-high four turnovers. Additionally, first-year Erica Schug and senior Meredith Conlin were centerpieces to Stevens' victory as they anchored the Ducks' defensive effort.

The Ducks induced 16 Rowan turnovers on the day. In addition to Cook's four, Rogers, Smart, Lax, Conlin, Cunniff, and Schug each caused one. Juliana Corson and Lauren Ferriola caused four of the Ducks' 12 turnovers to lead the Profs.

Rowan held a 14-11 edge on draw controls on the day. Rogers earned six to lead Stevens in this category. Meanwhile, senior Natalie Fitzpatrick collected three for the Ducks, while Westerby and sophomore Emily Leiby each had one. Molly Green had five to lead Rowan and Sterner picked up three.

Stevens enjoyed a 14-11 edge on ground balls. Cunniff scooped up a game-high five, while Conlin had three. Smart and junior Julieann Murphy each had two. Hannah Lombardo, Ferriola, Erin Scioli, and Reilly Schaup each picked up two to pace Rowan.

The Ducks were 20 for 23 on clears, while Rowan managed 14 for 18.

Rogers went 3 for 5 on free-position shots for Stevens, while Westerby finished 1 for 2. The Profs saw Green score on both of her eight-meter attempts. The Ducks scored twice on five Rowan cards, while Stevens killed off both of its penalties.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse will continue their homestand at DeBaun Athletic Complex on Tuesday Mar. 8 when they will face Alvernia University. The teams have met only once before with the Ducks coming away with a 24-3 win back in 2003.
