Women’s Lacrosse Races Past Arcadia; Locks Up Second Seed in MAC Freedom Tournament

Ducks clinch No. 2 seed in MAC Freedom Tournament with decisive win over Arcadia

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 27, 2022)  – Senior Camryn Rogers completed her 12th hat trick in the first quarter as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse built a 7-0 lead en route to an 18-2 victory over Arcadia University Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Junior Maddie Schmidt totaled five points and senior Maeve McGovern and sophomore Emily Leiby each added four for the Ducks, who won their second straight in moving to 14-2 on the year and to 6-1 in league play. The victory secured the second seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament and a semifinal matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Olivia Poley scored both goals for Arcadia, who fell to 7-9 on the year and to 4-3 in league play. The Knights have dropped three straight. If the season ended today, the Knights would host Lycoming in the MAC Freedom play-in game.

Rogers would finish with six goals and an assist to lead 12 different players with at least one point. Leiby finished with a career-high four goals, while McGovern and Schmidt combined for three goals and six assists. Senior Natalie Fitzpatrick had a pair of goals, with single tallies from junior Zoe Cook, first-year Emily Smart and senior Morgan Westerby rounding out the goal-scorers. Assists from first-year Alison Lax, junior Lauren Malicki, junior Julieann Murphy and first-year Rebecca Guerra rounded out the offensive contributions.

Senior Lauren Cunniff made six saves in the cage for the Ducks to earn the victory. First-year Erica Strojny took over in the fourth quarter. Emily Griffith and Mariya Occorso split time between the pipes for Arcadia, with Griffin making four saves in the first half to take the loss, while Occorso stopped one second-half shot.

The Ducks again took control of the game early in the first quarter. Westerby won the opening draw control and Schmidt found the back of the net less than a minute later giving the Ducks an early 1-0 lead.

Westerby kept possession with the home team, corralling the second of her seven draws on the evening. Rogers doubled the Ducks' lead less than a minute later, taking a feed from McGovern, and netting the first of her six goals. The early goal was Rogers' 64th of the season, pushing her past alumna Alyssa Pigot into sole possession of 10th place on the single-season goal-scoring list. Rogers would score three times in the opening period to complete the hat trick and when the final whistle sounded, the Branchburg, New Jersey native's season total moved to 69, which is believed to be the seventh-most in any single season in program history. Hall of Famer Valerie Barnhart sits atop the single-season goals list with 84, achieved in 2003.

After building a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter, the Ducks tacked on four goals in the second to take an 11-0 lead into halftime. Rogers would score twice to open third-quarter scoring, with goals from Fiztpatrick and Leiby powering the Ducks to a 15-0 lead.

Poley would score the first of her two goals early in the fourth quarter to spoil the shutout bid, with markers from Westerby and a pair from Leiby providing the final margin of victory. The Ducks crossed the 15-goal plateau in nine of their 14 wins.

Three of the Ducks' 18 goals came on free-position shots as Stevens went 3 for 4 on the evening. Rogers went 2 for 2 from eight meters, while Cook scored on her only attempt. For the season, Stevens is shooting over 50% (52 for 103) on free-position shots.

Arcadia finished with 14 turnovers on the evening, with the Ducks causing seven of them. Westerby and McGovern recorded two caused turnovers each, while Schmidt, Cook and senior Meredith Conlin each had one. Three different players each caused two turnovers to pace Arcadia.

Stevens finished with a 15-8 advantage on draw controls. Westerby's seven draws were a game high, while Leiby finished with three. Fitzpatrick snagged two, while Rogers had one to round out the Ducks' efforts. Hannah McAllister and Ashley Starkey each had two to lead Arcadia.

The Ducks went 15 for 16 on clears, including a perfect 6 for 6 in the second quarter. Conversely, Stevens held Arcadia to just 8 for 14.
