Huge First Quarter Sends Women’s Lacrosse Over Delaware Valley

Stevens scored first 12 goals of the game to secure third straight win

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (April 6, 2022)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of the game en route to a 20-3 victory over Delaware Valley University Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Lipinski Field.

Junior Zoe Cook totaled three goals and two assists to lead 13 different players with at least one point for the Ducks, who their third straight to move to 11-1 on the year and to 3-0 in conference play.

T.J. Smith was one of three goal scorers for the Aggies, who fell to 1-8 on the year and to 0-3 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley has dropped four straight and each of the last two meetings with the Ducks.

"It was great to see everyone play hard and compete today," head coach Karen Shaddock said. "Malicki and Anna had their first collegiate goals, Zoe, Cam and Leiby were great on the draw. Everyone was a threat offensively and produced. I also thought Makenna did a great job defending in the ride, while causing a lot of turnovers."

First-year Anna Velardi scored the first two goals of her career, while also adding a pair of assists to finish with a career-best four points. Senior Morgan Westerby found the back of the net three times for her second hat trick of the season. First-year Alison Lax joined Velardi, senior Camryn Rogers and juniors Julieann Murphy and Maddie Schmidt in producing a pair of goals. Senior Maeve McGovern, first-year Rebecca Guerra, sophomore Emily Leiby and junior Lauren Malicki each scored once to round out the goal scorers. Malicki's first-quarter marker was the first of her collegiate career.

Sophomore Carly Walker joined first-year Emily Smart, Lax and McGovern in dishing out one assist to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Senior Lauren Cunniff earned the victory in the cage for Stevens. First-year Erica Strojny took over at the start of the second quarter and played a career-high 45 minutes. Caroline Berg made 10 saves in defeat for the Aggies.

The Ducks scored on eight straight possessions in the opening quarter to take a commanding lead. Malicki scored the first goal of the game, stripping Ashley Chrencik and quickly transitioning to offense to net her first career goal.

Senior Natalie Fitzpatrick won the ensuing draw control to return possession back to the Ducks. McGovern then buried the first of two goals the fourth-year attackwoman would score in a 25-second span. Stevens finished the opening quarter with 11 goals, the most in a single quarter since the sport switched to its current four-quarter model.

Cook completed her ninth hat trick early in the second quarter before Smith found the back of the net to put the Aggies on the board. Schmidt quickly answered for the Ducks, and goals from Westerby, Guerra and Lax (twice) closed out the half. Cook's five-point outing left the Princeton, New Jersey native 12 shy of 100 for her career.

Each side scored twice in the third quarter and Rogers had her team-leading 52nd goal in the final period to provide the Ducks' final margin of victory. Rogers is seven shy of 100 career goals as a Duck after scoring 13 at Rutgers. Stevens ranks 27th in Division III in goals per game, while Rogers ranks 23rd.

The Ducks forced 12 of the Aggies' 21 turnovers. The Ducks forced their opponent into 21 turnovers for the second straight game. McGovern and first-year Makenna Quigley each caused two turnovers to pace the Ducks' defense. Chrencik recorded each of Delaware Valley's three caused turnovers.

Stevens had a commanding 21-5 advantage in draw controls, including an 11-1 margin in the opening period.

The advantage in turnovers helped Stevens gain a 23-10 advantage in ground balls. Velardi had four to lead both teams, while Lax and Rogers each had three. Three different players each picked up two to pace Delaware Valley.

The Ducks were successful on six of their eight clearing attempts, while holding Delaware Valley to just 5 of 20. Neither side was able to capitalize on extra-woman opportunities.

Stevens reached the 20-goal threshold for the fourth time this season. The Ducks held the Aggies to just three shots on goal.
