Rogers Sets Single-Season Goal-Scoring Record as Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Canton in NCAA First Round

Ducks earn first NCAA win since 2011 with double-digit victory over SUNY Canton

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 14, 2022)  – Senior Camryn Rogers scored six times to break the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse program's single-season goal-scoring record as the Ducks defeated SUNY Canton 27-2 Saturday in an NCAA First Round matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

On a day where many program records were set, senior Morgan Westerby netted four goals with three assists to surpass the 100-career point milestone and junior Julieann Murphy set a career-high with six points as the Ducks won their sixth straight to move to 18-2 on the year. The 18 victories set a new program record. The Ducks' victory marked the first NCAA win for the program since 2011.

Lindsey Wunder and Maddy Caron had goals for the Roos, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. SUNY Canton fell to 12-8 on the year.

"I am really proud of the team's performance today," head coach Karen Shaddock said. This was the best team effort we have had yet. We have said that our goal is to be a dynamic offense and today we exceeded that. They made a statement with the way we came out to play today and set some records for the program."

Junior Zoe Cook had four goals and an assist and classmate Maddie Schmidt had three goals and an assist for the Ducks, who saw 11 different players register at least one point. First-year Emily Smart finished with a goal and three assists and junior Emily Leiby and first-year Alison Lax each scored twice for the Ducks, who broke a 20-year record with their 27-goal output. First-year Rebecca Guerra and senior Natalie Fitzpatrick also found the back of the net and first-year Anna Velardi had one assist to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions.

Senior Lauren Cunniff earned the victory in the cage, making three stops over the first three quarters. First-year Erica Strojny made two saves over the final 15 minutes. Madison Leary had nine saves in defeat for SUNY Canton.

Rogers reached the milestone to account for the Ducks' 12 tally of the contest. Cook helped keep the possession alive along the near sideline after Westerby won the draw control following a Duck goal 90 seconds prior. After the restart, Cook found a cutting Rogers, who beat Leary for her 85 goal, surpassing current assistant coach, and Athletic Hall of Famer, Valerie Barnhart, who scored 84 goals during the 2003 season.

"There were some great individual records that we are very excited about," Shaddock commented. "I am really proud of the work Cam has put in to elevate her game and continue to grow all year. I am very excited for Morgan hitting her 100th point. She continues to get better and is playing her best lacrosse right now."

"This week has been a lot of fun with this team," the fourth-year head coach continued. "We are enjoying the moment, while also staying focused on our goals and what's next."

Despite the final outcome, it was actually the guests that jumped on the board first, with Wunder silencing the DeBaun Athletic Complex crowd with her 17th goal of the year. The Ducks would certainly have their chances in the early portion of the game, but Leary stood tall in net, recording three saves on four Stevens shots before the Ducks finally broke through on Schmidt's free-position goal midway through the period. The Ducks found a lot of success from eight meters, scoring 10 times on 11 free-position shots.

Westerby took the game over, putting the Ducks in front for good with three free-position goals in a 44-second span. Westerby finished the day with a career-best seven points (four goals and three assists) and her assist on Lax's first quarter marker pushed the Marlton, New Jersey native over the career milestone.

Once the team got settled, the Ducks scored in a variety of ways, using individual drives, sharp passing and a high level of accuracy from eight meters to score 10 times in the first quarter to take control of the game. The Ducks added seven more in the second, six more in the third and four more in the fourth to secure the victory. Caron's fourth-quarter goal snapped the Ducks' barrage and Guerra netted her seventh of the year in the final seconds to snap the program record for goals in a game, which was set back in 2002.

The Ducks also controlled the game in the circle, winning 24 of the game's 29 draw controls. Westerby corralled nine to lead all players, while Rogers and Leiby each had four. Rogers' four draws moved her to 103, one shy of matching alumna Emily Shanklin's program record of 104, set during the 2019 season. The Ducks' 24 draws were one shy of a season and program record.

Stevens was also disruptive to the Roos' offensive efforts, forcing Canton into 17 turnovers. Rogers and first-year Marie Lindberger each caused two turnovers, while Schmidt, Lax, senior Meredith Conlin, senior Brynne Pergolini and junior Colleen Shea each had one. Stevens matched a season-low with nine turnovers.

Stevens finished a perfect 15 for 15 on clears, while holding Canton to 11 of 18. The Ducks also won the ground ball battle, with Pergolini and Fitzpatrick each scooping up three, to produce a 19-8 advantage.

The Ducks were also perfect on the power play, scoring three times on three extra-woman advantages.

Up Next: Stevens hosts No. 1 Salisbury University Saturday in a second-round matchup. It will be the first meeting between the programs.
