Field Hockey Picks Up Win over Drew

The Ducks defeated the Rangers by a score of 3-1 at home

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 21, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Drew University at home on Wednesday night. Junior Julia Zatyko score the game-deciding goal in the first quarter to lead the Ducks to their second-straight win.
 
Stevens came out flying in the first. Sophomore Emily Smart scored an unassisted goal just 56 seconds into the game. She dribbled through several Ranger defenders and slotted the ball into the right side of the net past the goalkeeper. Zatyko scored the second goal of the game with just under three minutes left in the first. She intercepted a long pass from senior Lynda Farinella and fired it home to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead through 15 minutes.
 
Drew began to battle back in the second quarter. They outshot Stevens 4 to 3 in the second stanza and earned four penalty corners to the Ducks' two. Fifth-year goalkeeper Emily Franco was up to the task and made to saves to maintain a shutout through 30 minutes of action. The score was still 2-0 at the half.
 
Stevens once again came out on fire to start the third. They placed seven shots on goal and held the Rangers to no shots in the quarter. They also earned five penalty corner opportunities. Despite the constant pressure, the Ducks were unable to find another goal and after three quarters the score was still 2-0.
 
Drew finally cut into the lead just under two minutes into the final quarter. Tyler Olivio scored for the Rangers to make the score 2-1. The Ducks responded seven minutes later to regain their two-goal lead and close out the game. Junior Dani Hessels knocked the ball out of the air and into the net, assisting on the play was sophomore Makenna Quigley. The 3-1 score line held and Stevens earned the win.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Franco finished the game with four saves on five shots.
  • Drew goalkeeper Olyvia Jackson made 13 saves.
  • It was Stevens' seventh-straight win over the Rangers, dating back to 2014.
