DALLAS, Pa. (November 4, 2023) - Senior Amelia Rehrig scored the Ducks' lone goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to #1 Misericordia 2-1 after overtime on Saturday night in the MAC Freedom Championship.
The Ducks (9-7-2) will look to make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team on Monday's selection show. This was the fourth straight year Misericordia and Stevens have met in the MAC Freedom Championship game. The Cougars have now won the last three meetings in the final. The Cougars have also defeated the Ducks in six straight matchups. The Cougars currently have a record of 15-3-1.
Misericordia kicked off the game on the right foot as the Cougars scored just three minutes into the game. The Cougars kept up the pressure throughout the half, forcing a few saves out of sophomore Kenny Donley in the process. Right before the break, Stevens had their first shot on target of the game, as junior Olivia Castro had an attempt saved. The Cougars led 1-0 at the half.Â
Stevens responded in the second half three shots on target in the first eight minutes, before finally finding the back of the net in the 55th minute as Rehrig scored on an assist from senior Elsa Bley. The game would remain tied into the final five minutes of regulation. Misericordia continued to pepper the Duck net, but Donley stood tall and made three saves. The Ducks cleared the ball off the line with 35 seconds to go to keep the game tied. The two teams would go to overtime tied at one.
The Cougars hit the crossbar near the end of the first overtime but were unable to convert on the chance. In the second overtime, Misericordia scored in the 104th minute. Stevens made offensive changes and tried to find another equalizer, but they were unable to as the Cougars secured the MAC Freedom title.
