Trio of Hat Tricks Boost Women’s Lacrosse to Season-Opening Victory Over Montclair State

Rogers and Walker total four points each in victory over Red Hawks

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 22, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers and junior Carly Walker each totaled four points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Montclair State University 16-2 Wednesday in a non-conference contest at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Fifth-year Morgan Westerby also had a trick for the Ducks, who moved to 1-0 on the young season.

Chelsea Stack and Norah Monaghan each scored for Montclair State, who dropped to 0-1. Stevens has won five of the last six meetings between the teams and the Ducks' 14-goal margin of victory was the by either side in 25 all-time meetings.

Sophomore Emily Smart had a goal and two assists as 11 different players found the scoresheet. In her collegiate debut, first-year Stefanie Sellitto scored twice, while senior Zoe Cook, junior Emily Leiby, sophomore Anna Verlardi and first-year Maddie Hogan each scored once to round out the goal scorers. Sophomore Alison Lax had a pair of assists, while Cook and first-year Bella Mangano each dished out one helper to complete the Ducks' offensive production. The points for Sellitto, Hogan and Mangano were the first of each respective student-athlete's career.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made three saves to earn the victory. Sophomore Erica Strojny took over for Cunniff at the start of the second half and made one save. Joey Grotkopf had 10 saves in defeat for Montclair State.

Rogers, who set a new program record one season ago with 87 goals, opened the game's scoring. Stack answered less than a minute later to knot the score, but Westerby found the back of the net to quickly put the Ducks back in front. Westerby's goal sparked a run of four goals in less than two minutes. Rogers scored a quick pair of goals to complete the hat trick, before Westerby closed out the impressive stretch with her second of the game to push the lead to 5-1 roughly halfway through the opening quarter.

Sellitto netted the first goal of her collegiate career two minutes later before Westerby completed her hat trick in the final minute of the period. Walker beat the first-quarter buzzer to give the Ducks a commanding 8-1 lead entering the second quarter.

It was all Stevens in the second quarter. Walker found Velardi to open the scoring. Another goal from Sellitto and tallies from Hogan and Cook pushed the Ducks' advantage to double-digits and began the running clock.

Walker opened scoring in the third quarter for the second multi-goal game of her career. Monaghan beat Strojny to stop the run as Stevens scored 12 unanswered goals to break the game open. Walker would complete her first career hat trick late in the third period. Fourth-quarter goals from Smart and Leiby produced the game's final margin.

Stevens went 6 for 11 on free-position shots. Walker, Leiby and Hogan each scored on their only 8-meter attempt, with Cook and Westerby each going 1 for 2. Rogers went 1 for 3 on her free-position shots to account for the Ducks' 8-meter tallies.

Sellitto corralled six draw controls in helping the Ducks gain a 16-5 advantage. First-year Lauren Sullivan had four, while Cook, Leiby, sophomore Makenna Quigley and first-years Hana Yang and Eran Gleason, each had one. Noran Monaghan had two to pace Montclair State.

The Ducks caused 14 of Montclair State's 23 turnovers. Gleason led the team by causing three, while Sullivan and senior Colleen Shea each had two. The Red Hawks caused four turnovers, with Kaitlin Zazzaro causing two.

Also of note, the Ducks went 14 for 15 on clears, while Montclair State went 12 of 20.

Additionally, the contest marked the collegiate debuts for first-years Sellitto, Hogan, Mangano, Esposito, Gleason, Sullivan, Yang and Maggie Zarish-Yasunas.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse hosts Kean University at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on March 1. The Ducks were victorious over the Cougars 16-1 last season in Union and have won the 10 all-time meetings between the teams.
