Cook Scores 100th Goal at Stevens; Women's Lacrosse Downs No. 15 St. Lawrence for Sixth Straight Win

Three players post hat tricks to lead Ducks over Saints.

CANTON, N.Y. (March 12, 2023) – Senior Zoe Cook scored her 100th career goal at Stevens while fifth-year Camryn Rogers scored a season-high six goals and added an assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated No. 15 St. Lawrence 18-8 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Hall-Leet Stadium.

The win was the team's first over a ranked opponent since April 23rd, 2021, when they defeated then-No. 9 York College of Pennsylvania by a score of 8-7.

Neve Ley led the way for the Saints as she finished with three goals and one assist. All three of her goals came from free-position shots. Dana Fernandez also provided a hat trick for the St. Lawrence (1-1).

Senior Julieann Murphy scored twice and provided three assists to total five points on the day in helping the Ducks to their sixth straight victory. Sophomore Emily Smart had a career-high five assists while classmate Alison Lax tallied four. The Ducks were able to get two goals out of fifth-year Morgan Westerby and one assist from first-year Stefanie Sellitto.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made 12 saves. She earned her 28th career win and moved to 6-0 on the season. Raelynn Bovenzi made six saves in defeat for St. Lawrence.

The Ducks were able to get out to a big 3-0 lead early to quiet the home crowd. Westerby was able to find the back of the net less than a minute in on an assist from Murphy to go up 1-0. Cook then doubled the Duck lead with 11:42 to go, as Rogers provided the pass leading up to the goal. Forty-two seconds later, Rogers scored her first of the game, however, St. Lawrence scored four straight goals to finish off the first quarter. Ley scored three points on the run, scoring twice and providing an assist.

After eight scoreless minutes to start the second quarter, the Ducks turned things around, scoring five goals in less than three minutes to open up an 8-4 lead. Rogers kick started the run, scoring three straight, to give the Ducks energy. Smart assisted the first and third while Westerby assisted the middle goal on the Rogers run. Murphy and Schmidt each had unassisted goals to finish the run. Ley scored on the woman-advantage to give the Saints the final goal in the second quarter, but Stevens still held 8-5 at the break.

Defense once again reigned supreme to start the quarter as both teams were held off the scoreboard for the first nine minutes. Cook broke the scoreless streak on a pass from Smart with 5:36 remaining, but the Saints answered 17 seconds later. Lax was influential to close out the quarter, assisting both Schmidt and Westerby to put the Ducks up 11-7 with one quarter to go.

Rogers opened scoring in the final quarter on Smart's fourth assist of the game to push the Duck lead to five. Murphy and Schmidt each scored over the next two minutes as the Stevens lead continued to balloon. St. Lawrence scored their only goal in the fourth with 11:01 to go, but it was all Ducks from there. Cook answered the Saints goal less than a minute later and Rogers followed with her sixth of the game. Cook would score another with 4:30 and Schmidt closed things out with just over a minute to go, as Stevens remained perfect on the season.

The Ducks scored on only one of their six free-position shots. Murphy was the only one to convert for the Ducks, scoring from the eight-meter line in the second. Saint Lawrence went four for nine on free-position attempts.

Stevens finished with a 20-10 advantage on draw controls. Rogers led the team with nine while Sellitto had four. Junior Emily Leiby finished with three draw controls for the Ducks. Fernandez finished with four draw controls to lead the Saints.

Stevens caused three of St. Lawrence's 13 turnovers. First-year Lindsay Esposito led the team with two and Sellitto had one. The Saints caused six of the 12 Duck turnovers, with Jacqui Cloutier leading the way with two.

The Ducks were nearly perfect on clears, going 17 for 18. The Saints went 14 for 16.
