MAHWAH, N.J. (March 29, 2023) – First-year pitchers Ella Tozduman and Ashley Allen combined to pitch a shutout in game number one of a doubleheader as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split a pair of games with Ramapo, winning the first 4-0 and losing the second 8-0 Wednesday night at the Ramapo Athletic Center.
The shutout was the first for the softball team since May 14th of 2022, when the Ducks beat SUNY Geneseo 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament. It was also the first time this season that Ramapo has been held scoreless. Allen has only allowed one run in 12.2 innings of work on the season. This contest was the first time in Tozduman's career that she allowed zero runs.
Sophomore Madison Subbiondo led the Ducks at the plate on the day as she delivered four hits across the two games. She had three hits and an RBI in game number one and recorded just one hit in the second contest. Senior Olivia Warner also had three hits and an RBI in the first game.
"Proud of our efforts in game one," head coach Emily Kaczmarek said. "That was a big win and once again the pitching efforts were stellar."
After winning the first contest, the Ducks (11-9) maintained a six game winning streak, which was their longest of the season and the longest for the team since 2021. The loss for Ramapo was only their fourth of the year as they finished the day 14-4.
After a phenomenal outing in game one of yesterday's doubleheader against Montclair State, Tozduman (5-3) once again dominated in her starting role to earn her fifth collegiate win. She faced 19 batters and only surrendered five hits. She also struck out two Roadrunners.
Not only did Tozduman shine again in the contest, but first-year Ashley Allen did as well. For the second straight game backing up her fellow first-year, she allowed zero runs which helped the Ducks win their 11th game on the year. Allen pitched two and two thirds innings and only gave up two hits. She struck out one Roadrunner.
The Ducks scored in the first inning of the first game to take an early lead as they stayed red hot from yesterday's doubleheader. With one out in the inning, fifth year Meg Halloran hit a single to give the visitors their first base runner of the day. Sophomore Rachael Prescott also got on base via a hit in the next at-bat and pushed Halloran to second. Next up for Stevens was Warner, who kept the train rolling with a single to bring Halloran home and put the Ducks up 1-0.
Ramapo had a solid start from their pitcher as well, as Mahogany Wheeler (4-2) gave the Roadrunners 5.1 innings. She allowed one run on seven hits and was able to strike out just one Duck.
The game lacked runs for most of the afternoon as both teams were unable to generate any runs from the bottom of the first through the sixth inning. After the Ducks scored in the first, they only had a total of three runners left on base heading into the seventh.
With two outs in the top of the seventh and senior Alex Schoellig on second after an error, Halloran was able to give the Ducks life as she got on base with a single which moved Schoellig to third. Halloran was then able to steal second which put two runners in scoring position. In the next at bat and facing a 2-1 count, Prescott got to first via a fielding error from the Roadrunner right fielder which brought home Schoellig and Halloran to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead. Warner and Subbiondo followed that up with back-to-back singles to score senior Elise Fauske, who was pinch-running for Prescott.
Ramapo kicked off the second game by scoring their first run of the day. After a leadoff double from Katie Rygiel, she was brought home on a single by Wheeler to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 advantage.
The home side added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to give themselves a 3-0 advantage. Rygiel hit a two RBI single to extend their advantage.
Ramapo continued to pile it on, scoring three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to give them the 8-0 win. They accounted for 12 hits and zero errors while Stevens only had three hits and gave up four errors.
First-year Kyra Fisher (0-1) pitched two and two thirds innings, giving up one run on five hits. Senior Erin Kries pitched three innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits.
Kassy Stefanski (5-2) pitched all six innings for Ramapo. She walked four and struck out one.
