WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2023) – Fifth-year
Meg Halloran had five hits and a pair of RBI and junior
Jessica Guerrero plated three runs as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Hunter College Thursday at Waterfront Park.
First-year
Emily Wohlleber drove in a pair of runs and senior
Erin Kreis allowed three hits over six innings as the Ducks defeated the Hawks 9-1 in the opener.
Senior
Olivia Warner drove in two runs and fifth-year
Lexi Gregule went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and a stolen base as the Ducks won the nightcap with an identical 9-1 score.
"Two good wins today with a productive offensive effort," head coach
Emily Kaczmarek said. "We need to continue to fine tune some small things to elevate to the level of play we want to compete at."
After a scoreless first, the Ducks jumped on the board with three runs in the second off Tea Panagakos (0-1). Junior
Carolyn Yahn began the rally with a one-out single. Senior
Elise Fauske reached on an infield single. After a passed ball, sophomore
Emma Ruiz stroked a two-run single to put the Ducks in front. Ruiz stole second and came around to score on Halloran's run-scoring single two batters later. Panagakos allowed six runs on 11 hits over five innings.
The early lead was more than enough for Kreis (1-1). The right-hander allowed two singles and a double and struck out six without walking a batter. After an unearned run in the third spoiled the shutout bid, but Kreis retired seven in a row to record her 19th career complete game.
The Ducks broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Wohlleber had the big blow in the fifth with a two-out, two-run single and the Ducks scored three times against two Hunter pitchers in the sixth, with a two-run error on Wohlleber's fly ball to right ending the game.Â
In game two, the Ducks sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth as the Ducks touched starter Leah Dillon (0-1) for four runs. Gregule started the lengthy rally with a single and senior
Alex Schoellig reached on an infield single. Guerrero reached on a fielding error by Brianna Flores to load the bases. Halloran singled to drive in the Ducks' first run and Warner followed with a two-run single to plate Guerrero and Shoellig. Wohlleber plated the fourth run of the inning. Dillon allowed five runs, three earned, in 3 1-3 innings with two strikeouts.
After first-year
Kyra Fischer worked two shutout innings in her first career start, Hunter scored a run in the third off first-year
Ella Tozduman (1-0) on a bases loaded fielder's choice. After a shaky start to her outing, Tozduman settled down and retired four of her final five batters to earn her first collegiate victory. First-year
Ashley Allen worked a scoreless 1 1-3 for her first career save.
Leading 4-1, the Ducks tacked on a run in the fourth on Guerrero's one-out single. A four-run rally in the fifth closed out the sweep. Graduate student
Siobhan Cottell singled. Fauske ran for Cottell and promptly stole second. A groundout moved Fauske to third and she came around to score on sophomore
Megan Curtis' first collegiate hit and RBI. Gregule was hit by a pitch. Shoellig delivered an RBI single and Guerrero ended the game with a 2-run single.Â
All totaled, the Ducks scored 11 two-out runs across both ends of the doubleheader. The Ducks also totaled 25 hits.
