Softball Drops Doubleheader at Manhattanville

The Ducks have lost five straight games.

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 12, 2023) – Sophomore Madison Subbiondo recorded three hits and three RBI on the day, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team lost two games to Manhattanville College, 4-1 and 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Valiants Field.

Along with Subbiondo, junior Jessica Guerrero also had a good day at the plate for the Ducks (12-14). She tallied a hit in both games and also scored a run in game one. Senior Olivia Warner added two hits for the Ducks in game two. Manhattanville has now won ten straight games as they improve to 14-4.

The day started off good for the Ducks as they were able to score in the top of the first. With one out in the inning, senior Meg Halloran was able to reach base on a throwing error after she laid down a bunt. She advanced to second on the play. Warner proceeded to ground out which advanced Halloran to third. In the next at-bat, Subbiondo hit an RBI single to score Halloran and put the Ducks up one.

Manhattanville scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Valiants scored on a single and a fielding error by Guerrero. The home side added another run in the third to push their advantage to two.

In the bottom of the sixth with the score still 3-1 in favor of Manhattanville, the Valiants recorded a double followed by a single to score another run to increase their lead to 4-1. After the first inning, the Ducks only tallied two more hits as they were shut down offensively.

Charli Shinstine (9-0) remains perfect on the season for the Valiants. She pitched all seven innings for Manhattanville in the first game and only allowed one run on three hits. She struck out ten Ducks in the contest.

First-year Ella Tozduman (6-5) earned the start for the Ducks in game one. She allowed three runs on four hits in four innings pitched. First-year Kyra Fischer entered in relief and pitched two innings. She allowed one run on three hits.

Building off of their momentum gained in the first game, Manhattanville struck in the bottom of the first inning in game two to take a 1-0 lead. They scored the run on a bunt play.

Stevens did all of their damage in the third inning. Fifth-year Lexi Gregule started the inning with a leadoff double followed up by a single from Guerrero, which advanced Gregule to third. In the next at-bat, Halloran tallied a single to score Gregule and advance Guerrero to third. Halloran also stole second in the next at-bat, which was a walk from Warner to load the bases. Subbiondo brought two base runners home with her single in the following plate appearance as the Ducks had a 3-1 lead.

The Valiants responded to the big inning from Stevens by adding two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. That tied the game up at three.

With runners on first and third in the bottom of the sixth, Samantha Walsh drove a single up the middle for the home side to give them a 4-3 advantage heading to the final inning. The Valiants were able to hold on and complete the sweep of Stevens.

Senior Erin Kreis (3-8) pitched five innings for the Ducks as she earned the start in game two. She gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits. She also struck out one batter. Fischer pitched one inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits.

Emily Mottoshiski (5-4) earned the start for Manhattanville in the second game. She pitched all seven innings and gave up three runs on three hits. She struck out four batters.
