Warner Powers Softball to Vital Comeback in Game Two of a Doubleheader with Arcadia

The two teams split the contests on the night.

GLENSIDE, Pa. (April 23, 2023) – Senior Olivia Warner tallied three RBI on two hits in game number two as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team completed a huge comeback in game number two of a MAC Freedom doubleheader at Arcadia on Sunday. The Knights took game one 5-4 while the Ducks took game two 6-5 after being down 5-0.

Along with Warner, fifth-year Meg Hallaron also had a good day at the plate for the Ducks (14-18, 6-6 MAC Freedom). She tallied three hits and scored two runs across the two games. Stevens currently sits in fifth place in the MAC Freedom standings with just one week remaining in the season. Arcadia (17-18, 6-7 MAC Freedom) sits in sixth place, just a half game behind the Ducks..

Picking up in the sixth inning of game two with the Ducks down five, the team had to win to remain in a playoff position after dropping game one. Junior Jessica Guerrero hit a leadoff double to get things started for the Ducks. With one out, senior Alex Schoellig hit an infield single but was unable to advance senior Elise Fauske, who was pinch running for Guerrero. The Ducks scored on the next at bat as sophomore Madison Subbiondo hit a single to center. All the runners advanced and Fauske scored on an error. With two outs, first-year Joy Pikul hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to three. Warner also struck for a RBI single in the inning as the Ducks got the Arcadia lead down to two heading into the seventh inning.

With one out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, graduate student Siobhan Cottell reached base on an error as a run came home to score and cut the lead to one. Later with two outs and the bases still loaded, Warner delivered in the clutch with a single up the middle that brought in two runs to give the Ducks the lead. Senior Erin Kries (4-10) shut down Arcadia in the seventh as the Ducks stormed back to claim victory. Kries pitched the whole game for Stevens. She gave up five runs on six hits and struck out three.

Earlier in the game, Arcadia scored three runs in the second as they opened up a 3-0 lead. Three different Knights recorded an RBI in the inning as they looked to take both games from Stevens.

The Knights extended their lead by scoring two runs in the fifth. They scored on an error from the Ducks and a single.

Juliana Presto (12-9) took the loss in relief for Arcadia. She pitched just 1.1 innings, but allowed three runs on four hits. Paige Nolan started and pitched five and two-thirds innings. She gave up three runs on five hits. Both pitchers had three strikeouts.

In game one, Arcadia again jumped out to an early lead, this time striking in the first inning. Megan Sooy hit a solo home run to put the Knights in front.

The Ducks tallied two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Cottell reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, but two runs scored on the play as the bases were loaded.

Arcadia put up three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Grace Caldwell, Allison LaRochelle, and Devon Fithian all hit RBI singles in the inning.

Facing their final three outs in the seventh, Stevens scored twice to tie things up. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Megan Curtis drew a walk to bring home a run. Arcadia then committed an error in the next at-bat to bring home the tying run. Stevens would not be able to do anymore damage with the bases loaded.

Arcadia won the game with one out in the seventh as Sooy reached on a fielder's choice to score the winning run.

First-year Ella Tozduman (7-7) pitched the whole game. She gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out one.

Presto (12-8) pitched the whole game in a winning effort for Arcadia. She gave up four runs on four hits. She struck out five and walked three.
