YORK, Pa. (May 14, 2023) – Three Ducks recorded two points as the No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 York 8-6 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at Kinsley Field hosted by York.
The Ducks finished the season with an 18-3 record, which matched the final record from the 2022 season. The Ducks, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning the MAC Freedom Tournament, lost to York for the second time this season. They fell to the Spartans 20-8 back on March 22nd.
Fifth-year Camryn Rogers, senior Zoe Cook, and sophomore Emily Smart each recorded two points in the game. Rogers and Cook each scored twice while Smart provided two assists. Junior Emily Leiby and sophomore Alison Lax each scored twice for Stevens while senior Julieann Murphy tallied an assist to round out the contributions for the Ducks.
Kiersten Blanchard scored three goals and had one assist to lead York. Gianna Huet also added two goals. The Spartans will advance to the next round and play either Salisbury or Meredith. They currently have a 17-3 record.
Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in goal for Stevens. She made 11 saves in the game. Bella Gerabo started for York and she made six saves.
Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter as the two teams combined for just two goals. Just over a minute in, Smart forced a save from Garabo. At the 6:05 mark, York finally found the breakthrough goal via Huet to put the Spartans up 1-0. They would hold the one goal lead for most of the quarter until Zoe Cook tied things up with 27 seconds left in the frame on a player advantage. Smart provided the assist on the play. The two teams would be tied at one heading to the second.
The second quarter became a battle as both teams fought to gain the halftime advantage. In the first ten minutes of play, Cunniff made six saves while Garabo made one to keep things knotted at one. York scored at the 4:59 mark to take a 2-1 advantage. The Ducks tied things up again at the 2:19 mark via Rogers. She scored unassisted on a player advantage. The Spartans then responded just over a minute later to restore their advantage. Stevens tied things up with 19 seconds left before halftime thanks to Leiby. However, York scored with one second on the clock to take a 4-3 lead into the break.
Stevens tied things up just under three minutes into the third as Lax scored on an assist from Smart. The Spartans then jumped out to their biggest lead of the game as they scored at 9:10 and 7:07 to take a 6-4 advantage. Stevens once again tacked on a player advantage goal from Zoe Cook, this time assisted by Murphy, with 1:19 on the clock. The Spartans led 6-5 going into the fourth.
Blanchard opened the fourth with her third goal of the game for the Spartans that saw them go up 7-5. York then took their largest lead at 8-5 with 11:04 remaining in the game which forced a timeout by head coach Karen Shaddock. Stevens responded out of the timeout, scoring at the 9:17 mark from Rogers to make it 8-6.
Stevens had seven draw controls while York had 10. First-year Stefanie Sellitto led the Ducks with six and Rogers added one.
The Ducks were successful on 16 of their 22 clear attempts. The Spartans went 15 for 21 on clear attempts.
Stevens caused eight of the 18 York turnovers. First-year Eran Gleason led the team with two. Six other Ducks recorded one. York caused 12 of the 21 Stevens turnovers.
The Ducks went zero for two on free-position attempts. The Spartans went one for eight on free-position attempts.
