No. 23 Women's Lacrosse Takes Down #2 Misericordia in the MAC Freedom Championship Game

This marks the Ducks' second straight championship.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 6, 2023) – Fifth-years Camryn Rogers and Morgan Westerby each scored three goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated #2 Misericordia 10-5 in the MAC Freedom Championship game Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks claim their second-straight MAC Freedom Championship as they finish the regular season 17-2. Along with Rogers and Westerby, sophomore Alison Lax put in two goals for the Ducks. Seniors Julieann Murphy and Maddie Schmidt also tallied two points as Murphy had a goal and an assist while Schmidt had two assists. Senior Zoe Cook scored one goal and sophomore Emily Smart tallied one assist to round out the Duck contributions.

Four different players scored for Misericordia in the contest. Their season ends with a 11-8 record and a 7-1 record in conference.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start between the pipes and earned her 17th win of the season. She made five saves in the game. Madelyn Uetz started for Misericordia and she made nine saves.

It was a battle between the two teams. After last week's 10-9 triple overtime game, neither team came out firing in this one as no one scored in the first 12 minutes of play. Stevens finally got things going with 2:37 left in the quarter as Lax found the back of the net. The lead wouldn't last long as the Cougars responded 67 seconds later. The score would finish 1-1 after one.

Stevens gained some separation from the Cougars in the second quarter. The Ducks got Rogers going less than two minutes into the second as she struck on an assist from Schmidt. Westerby added another 49 seconds later to put the Ducks up 3-1. The fifth year then scored again as Smart provided the pass and Westerby slapped it into the net. Zoe Cook then tallied a goal from a free position shot as the Ducks found themselves on a 4-0 run. Misericordia would get one back at the 3:15 mark, but Rogers restored the four goal lead with just over a minute remaining as the Ducks led 6-2 at the break.

The third quarter was another low scoring frame as the teams combined for just three goals. After four minutes of scoreless action, Murphy got on to the scoresheet as Schmidt provided the assist. Westerby recorded her hat trick five minutes later. The Cougars tallied the final goal of the quarter as Stevens led 8-3 going to the third with the Ducks 15 minutes away from clinching the title.

Misericordia scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter as they cut the Ducks lead down to three, the lowest it had been since the first quarter. Just under two minutes later, the Ducks scored a crucial goal to take momentum back as Lax tallied her second of the game. With 3:35 left, Rogers all but sealed the game as she tallied her third of the game. The Ducks held off Misericordia the rest of the way as they won another MAC Freedom title.

Stevens had nine draw controls while Misericordia had 10. Zoe Cook and first-year Stefanie Sellitto had three. Junior Emily Leiby also added two for the home side.

The Ducks were successful on 18 of their 21 clear attempts. The Cougars went 12 for 16 on clear attempts.

The Ducks caused 16 of the 25 Misericordia turnovers. Leiby led the team with four while graduate student Josie Cook had three. Sellitto and Westerby each added two for the Ducks. Five other Ducks had one. Misericordia caused 11 of the Ducks' 19 turnovers.

The Ducks went one for three on free-position attempts, with Zoe Cook being the only one to convert for the Ducks. The Cougars went two for two on free-position attempts.

Up Next: The Ducks earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Selection Show will be held on Monday, May 8th at 10:30 a.m.
