Heartbreak! Women’s Soccer Falls in Final Seconds at No. 3 Messiah

Rehrig scores, but Ducks fall to third-ranked Falcons in final seconds

GRANTHAM, Pa. (September 2, 2023) – Senior Amelia Rehrig found the back of the net in the 29th minute, but a goal in the final seconds sent No. 3 Messiah past the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team Saturday evening in a non-conference matchup at Shoemaker Field.

Senior Dana Perry made a career-high 10 saves for the Ducks, who dropped to 0-2.

Bella Touzeau and Kristina Akselsen each scored for the third-ranked Falcons, who improved to 2-0. Messiah has won the last three meetings in the series. Four of the last five meetings in the all-time series have been decided by one goal or fewer.

Ava Wert made two saves to earn the victory for Messiah.

In the 90th minute, Messiah's Kaitlyn Laird carried possession deep into the attacking third. Laird made a move and attempted to score, only for Perry to thwart the scoring attempt. As Messiah was prepared to pounce on the loose ball, an incredible sliding play by a Duck defender knocked the ball away from danger and a corner was awarded to the hosts.

With the clock approaching full time, Akselsen drove a right-footed service towards the goal. The strike carried towards the goal and tucked neatly over the leaping Perry and inside the far post.

The Rundown
  • Rehrig broke through for the Ducks' first goal of the season in the 29th minute. Graduate student Julia Cairns began the scoring play by sending a crossing ball inside the six. Messiah's defenders broke up the pass, but the ball caromed right to Rehrig and the Chevy Chase, Maryland native tapped the ball into the left corner of the net to put Stevens on the board.
  • The Ducks' 1-0 lead held up into the second half, until a questionable yellow card led to a penalty kick, which Touzeau converted to draw the teams even.

Top Performers
  • Rehrig led the team with three shots – two of which were on frame.
  • Perry's 10 saves are the most by a Stevens netminder since alumna Izzy DiDario also stopped 10 shots in the Ducks' NCAA victory over Middlebury on 11/17/19.

For the Opponents
  • Messiah finished with a 22-5 edge in shots and an 11-0 advantage in corners.
  • The victory extended Messiah's winning streak at Shoemaker Field to six.
