Women’s Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Match to St. John Fisher 3-1

Shannon paces team with 13 kills. but Ducks drop opening match of Heron Invitational

GENEVA, N.Y. (September 22, 2023) – Junior Cleo Shannon had a team-high 13 kills, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to St. John Fisher College 3-1 (27-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22) Friday to open the Heron Invitational, hosted by William Smith College at Bristol Gymnasium.

Junior Parker Adkins added 10 kills and senior Meg Dion finished with seven kills and three blocks for the Ducks, who saw their two-match losing streak come to an end in dropping to 5-3 on the year.

Kaylene Noble had a match-high 14 kills and Delayne Young added 13 for the Cardinals, who improved to 4-7. St. John Fisher has won four of its last five matches. The Cardinals' victory snapped the Ducks' 13-match winning streak in the all-time series.

The Rundown
The opening set saw the teams exchange two-point runs through the first 11 points of the match. The Ducks would grab the first significant lead of the match on consecutive kills from senior Elle Maggio to grab a 10-7 lead. The teams would remain within three points of one another, and it was Stevens that reached the first set point of the contest on a Shannon kill. However, the Cardinals scored four of the final five points to claim the first set.

St. John Fisher turned in its best offensive performance in the second set, finishing with a .360 hitting percentage with just a pair of attack errors. The Ducks turned in their longest scoring run of the match with a 6-1 swing that included kills from four different players. The Cardinals answered with a 5-1 run of their own to pull within one and drew even on a pair of kills from Kaylene Noble and Olivia Nellis. After pulling even. St. John Fisher scored seven of the final 10 points to claim the set.

Stevens turned in its best offensive performance in the third set, finishing with a match-high .333 hitting percentage. Senior Liz Patterson and Shannon combined for six kills on nine swings without an error. The Ducks got off to a fast start in the frame by scoring seven of the first 10 points, before St. John Fisher rallied to knot the frame at 11. Stevens reeled off a 6-1 run to open a 20-15 lead and a solo block from sophomore Mallory Eder and a kill from Patterson closed out the frame.

Looking to even the match, St. John Fisher took an early lead, however, the Ducks didn't let allow the Cardinals to lead by more than two points until a 4-1 stretch saw St. John Fisher open an 18-14 lead. Stevens pulled back to within one (21-20) on an attack error and a pair of Shannon kills, but the Cardinals scored three of the final four points in the match to earn the victory. 

Top Performers
  • A back-and-forth affair throughout the match, the teams combined for 34 ties and 19 lead changes. 
  • First-year Molly Harris recorded her second career double-double with 19 assists and a career-high 13 digs. Harris' 19 helpers were matched by sophomore Gabbi Roberts.
  • Dion and Patterson each served an ace.
  • Shannon had produced double-digit kills in four of her eight matches, including three of the last four.
  • Eder led the Ducks with three blocks, including two solo rejections.
  • Despite the result, Stevens finished with a higher hitting percentage.

  • Kiera Hartpence had a match-high 17 digs.
  • St. John Fisher finished with nine aces.
  • Ana Gutman paced the Cardinals matched Eder's output with three blocks.

Stevens continues play in upstate New York Saturday, with matches against SUNY Cortland (11 a.m.) and William Smith (1:30 p.m.). The matchup with the Red Dragons is the first meeting between the sides since 2013 and Stevens has won six of the last seven matchups.
