Field Hockey Gets off to Best Start Since 2009 With Win Over Moravian

The Ducks have only allowed one goal in two games, which is the best defensive start since 2008.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 4, 2023) - Junior Makenna Quigley scored for the second straight game as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Moravian College 2-1 on Monday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks start the season 2-0 for just the first time since the 2009 campaign. Stevens now has beaten Moravian (0-2) for the second time in just three all-time meetings. Stevens has conceded just one goal so far in two games, which is the least amount of goals conceded in the programs first two games since the 2008 season. Quigley was able to convert for Stevens in the first half, while junior Emily Smart gave the Ducks the lead in the second half to secure the win.

Just over three minutes into the game, Quigley was able to draw the first penalty corner of the game and then recorded a shot on target off of it, but her attempt was saved. Neither team was able to generate too many more chances, but senior Dani Hessels had two shots on goal in three seconds that were stopped at the 12:18 mark. In the second quarter, Quigley pounced on a ball off of a scrum just five minutes in to put the Ducks ahead. Junior Sarah Korczukowski provided the assist. Stevens led 1-0 at the break.

Coming out of the break, Moravian tied things at one just five minutes in off of a penalty corner. Stevens would then turn up the pressure, but were unable to score a goal in the third quarter. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Smart was able to score to put the Ducks in front 2-1. Korczukowski, who was awarded the assist on the play, took a shot that was redirected by Smart. Stevens would hold on to remain perfect on the young season ahead of two ranked road tests next week.
