Women's Soccer Dispatches King's 7-0

Hoboken, N.J. – Graduate student Nicole Angelini scored twice as first-year Alina Friz added a goal and two assists to power the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 7-0 win over King's College on Wednesday.

Six different goal scorers potted markers for Stevens (10-4-2, 6-0-0 MAC Freedom) as King's (3-9-5, 2-3-1 MAC Freedom received two saves each from Kelsey Sorensen and Courtney Monard.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks wasted little time, netting their game's first goal 7:07 into the match. Angela Dinh had her initial try blocked, but the rebound popped out to Sophia Murphy. The first-year took a hit from distance, putting it over the goalkeeper for the 1-0 edge. The home side doubled their margin in the 24th minute. Lauren Alley was taken down in the box after speeding past her defender, and the junior stepped up to the penalty spot for the kick. She converted a low shot, making it 2-0.

Elsa Bley nearly added to the lead in the 37th minute, putting a shot from distance off target. Stevens polished off first-half scoring with just over four minutes left. Molly McCann received a long pass and got around multiple defenders before slipping a pass to Friz, who put a one-touched ball into the back of the net.

The Ducks held a commanding 8-0 lead in shots at the halftime mark and 6-0 in corner kicks.

Stevens opened the game up in a big way in the second half, tallying three goals in a 3:48 span. Bley drove a long ball from deep that Friz got a touch on. The pass found Angelini and, with the goalkeeper out of position, deposited the shot into a vacated net. Seconds off the restart, the Ducks drew a foul, and Bley played quickly for Gab Aloe. Aloe crossed from the near side into the box, and Kaitlyn Pettit headed the service home, making it 5-0. The Ducks capped off the barrage with Sarah Wnorowski converting a pass from Friz.

The Stevens defense locked in and rarely allowed the Monarchs to cross midfield. Malia Chopra nearly tacked on her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute, but Sorensen made a diving save. The Ducks closed out the scoring with 30 seconds remaining, as Angelini was hauled down in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick.

FROM THE FIELD (Head Coach Stuart Dick)
  • "We are so lucky to work with a great group of young women day in and day out. They give everything every day and we couldn't ask for anything more up to this point.  Another nice result and it's time to prepare for Misericordia. Hopefully we will have a good crowd behind us on Saturday."
