Women's Volleyball Bested By No. 11 Washington & Lee In NCAA Tournament

Newport News, Va. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team was knocked off by No. 11 Washington & Lee University in four sets in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Ducks (28-7) fell 25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the Ducks trailing 4-2, Parker Adkins brought the team within one on a kill, putting down a set from Liz Patterson. The Generals went back in front by three at 6-3, but consecutive kills from Adkins and Cleo Shannon brought it back to one as Molly Harris collected assists on both. The W&L lead grew to five at 13-8, forcing the Ducks into their first timeout of the opening frame.

Adkins halted the run with a kill off a feed from Alexa Brucculeri, and the Ducks trimmed the deficit to three, with Vivian Lisboa notching her first kill of the match. The Generals responded with four of the
next six markers, extending their lead to 18-12. After Meg Dion stopped the rally, the Generals reeled off six of the final eight points to claim the opening set 25-16.

The Ducks opened the scoring in the second stanza on a kill from Lisboa, but Generals quickly countered with five straight markers, forcing Stevens into an early timeout. The run continued after the timeout as the Generals pushed the margin into double figures. Mallory Eder ended the spurt with a kill, and Stevens went on a 5-0 run to get as close as 10. Stevens continued to fight back, using consecutive double blocks anchored by Dion to make it 21-11, yet W&L scored four of the final five points to go up 2-0.

Stevens fell behind 5-1 in the third period but responded with the next two on a service error and a kill from Elle Maggio. Harris served up three consecutive points to give Stevens a slim 7-6 edge. Back-to-back kills from Lisboa and Shannon tied the third at 10, and the set was level at 11, 12, 13, and 14 before a Lisboa kill and a double-block from Shannon and Lisboa gave Stevens a 16-14 lead.

Adkins continued the run with a roll shot kill from the outside before an attack error gave the ball back to Washington & Lee. A Sarah Bolduc extended the Stevens lead to 19-16, and the Generals called their first timeout of the set. The timeout worked as three unforced errors tied the period at 19.
Kills from Bolduc and two Dion, along with an unforced hitting errorextended the Stevens margin to three at 23-20. Maggio tallied her seventh kill to bring up set point before an attack from Avery Myers went long, and Stevens claimed the fourth stanza 25-20.

The Generals raced out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set as Stevens called an early timeout. The lead swelled to 11-3 as the Generals took advantage of several unforced errors. Lisboa paused the spurt with a kill, and the Ducks got within six on a Bolduc kill. Washington & Lee proved to be too much for the Ducks, reeling off six consecutive points to push the gap to 12. Stevens fended off three match points on two Adkins kills
and a double-block from Lisboa and Adkins, but a kill from the Generals ended the match.
