Smart Sets Single-Game Program Assist Record As No. 17 Women's Lacrosse Beats Kean 19-9

Smart had nine assists in the game, which surpassed the previous record of eight.

UNION, N.J. (February 28, 2024) - Junior Emily Smart set the program record for assists, while sophomore Stefanie Sellitto scored a career-high nine goals, as the No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Kean 19-9 in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon.

Smart broke the single-game assist record by recording nine tonight. The record was previously held by Mariel Haubrich '17, who provided eight assists in a 21-0 win at Alfred back on April 2, 2017. Sellitto's goal tally fell one short of the single-game program record set by Kyra Bednarski '20 back in 2019, as she scored 10 in a 22-16 defeat against Rhodes on March 19.  The Ducks start the year 3-0 for the third-straight season. The victory was the first on the road for Stevens this year. Stevens is now 12-0 all-time against Kean, including 6-0 at Kean. Kean drops to 2-1 with the loss.

Sellitto and Smart connected at the 9:49 mark to put the Ducks up 1-0. The Cougars answered just over a minute later to tie the game at one. Sellitto was able to put the Ducks back up with 6:31 remaining as she scored unassisted. She would record her hat trick on an assist from Smart at 4:48, completing the hat trick in under 11 minutes. 47 seconds later, senior Emily Leiby scored with a player advantage, with the assist again coming from the stick of Smart. First-year Tory Seaton scored her first career goal to close the quarter, as Smart found her for the goal. The Ducks led 5-1 after one. Stevens pushed their lead to seven quickly in the second as the Ducks scored the first three goals of the quarter. Junior Rebecca Guerra and graduate student Zoe Cook each tallied unassisted goals, with Cook's coming from a free-position. Sellitto and Smart hooked up for the other goal. Kean added the next two scores to make the score 8-3 with 4:47 left in the half. Sellitto scored again at the 3:34 mark, this time with sophomore Maddie Hogan assisting. Kean would add another goal in the quarter while junior Alison Lax scored with five seconds remaining on an assist from Seaton as the Ducks led 10-4 at the break.

Less than a minute into the third, Smart switched from provider to scorer as she tallied her first on an assist from Zoe Cook. Sellitto scored less than a minute later on a feed from Smart. Zoe Cook scored 29 seconds after that goal with Smart assisting as the Ducks' lead quickly ballooned to nine. With 10:19 left, Sellitto fired in another goal, this time Hogan assisting, as the Ducks took a 14-4 lead. The Cougars fought back though, as they scored four of the final five goals in the third to trim the deficit. In the fourth, Stevens closed the door early by continuing to build the lead. Sellitto tallied her ninth with 13:34 to go, with a player advantage, as Smart assisted another goal. Zoe Cook would score her second goal of the game unassisted to go take a 17-8 lead. The clock would read 7:50 when the ball crossed the line off the stick of first-year Kamryn Kramer, who scored her first career goal off a free-position attempt.
