Softball Drops MAC Crossover Doubleheader to York

Ducks drop both ends of doubleheader to the Spartans

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 10, 2024) – Junior Madison Subbiondo drove in three runs across two games and first-year Maria Dante had two doubles and a pair of RBI, but the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both ends of a Middle Atlantic Crossover doubleheader to York College of Pennsylvania Sunday at Waterfront Park by identical 17-5 scores.

Junior Emma Ruiz and sophomores Rachael Prescott and Joy Pikul each plated a run for the Ducks, who closed the day 5-3.

Morgan Sauers drove in eight runs across the two games to pace York, who improved to 6-3. The Spartans have won three straight contests. Sunday's doubleheader marked the first regular season meeting between the squads, who previously met in a neutral-site game the 2021 NCAA Erie Regional.

The Rundown
  • York won the opening game on the strength of a 13-run first inning, boosted by an uncharacteristic seven walks against four Stevens hurlers, who battled a questionable strike zone in the opening inning. Conversely, York's Natalie Rietema (2-2) kept the Ducks at bay in the early innings until facing that same questionable strike zone late in the game.
  • Stevens spoiled the shutout bid in the fourth. First-year Elizabeth Kirstein reached on a fielding error. Sophomore Jay Morales pinch-ran at first and advanced on a Subbiondo single. After a groundout, Prescott drove in a run with a single. With York failing to get the ball back into the circle, both Subbiondo and Prescott advanced a base, with the former scampering home with the Ducks' second run.
  • In the fifth, with a steady rain falling, the Ducks struck for three runs against Rietema. First-year Larissa Cooper worked a one-out walk to reach base for the first time as a Duck. Dante and Kirstein walked to load the bases. Subbiondo followed with a two-run single up the middle and Ruiz added an RBI single to account for the Ducks' final run.
  • In game two, York raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first, only for the Ducks to answer with a three-spot against Kyrsten Coppage (4-1). Ruiz walked to lead off the inning and moved around the bases with consecutive walks to first-year Emma Quattrochi and Prescott. Ruiz crossed home on a wild pitch to account for the Ducks' first run of the game. Dante followed with a hard-hit double, rallying to work a full count against Coppage, to score Prescott. Quattrochi followed right behind the Ducks' infielder, taking advantage of a York fielding error.
  • After York scored six times in the third to break the game open, Pikul plated a run in the third with an RBI double and Dante slugged her second RBI double of the game in the fifth to account for the Ducks' final run.
  • Sophomore Kyra Fischer (3-3) suffered the loss in both games.

Top Performers
  • Quattrochi's run in game two was her first in a Stevens uniform.
  • Still early in the season, the Ducks have six doubles on the year and Dante has accounted for two of them.
  • Pikul's third-inning double in game two was the Poughkeepsie, New York native's first career two-bagger.
  • Across the two games, Stevens drew 13 walks.

For the Opponents
  • Sauers collected four of her six RBI in game two on a fifth inning grand slam.
