No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Defeat of Season to No. 19 Amherst

Hogan led the way for Stevens with three goals and an assist.

AMHERST, Mass. (March 30, 2024) - Sophomore Maddie Hogan scored three goals and had one assist, but it wasn't enough as the No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Amherst 11-10 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Ducks to 7-1 as they lose their first game of the season. The winning streak ends at seven-straight games as Stevens turns towards MAC Freedom play next weekend. Stevens is now 1-2 against the Mammoths, losing the last two in the series. Amherst improves to 4-4.

Amherst scored two goals in the first four minutes as the home side jumped out to the early lead. Senior Emily Leiby got Stevens on the board, as she scored an unassisted goal with 9:13 on the clock. The Ducks would tie the game sophomore Stefanie Sellitto scored on a dish from Leiby. Just two minutes after the Sellitto goal, junior Emily Smart found the back of the net, with graduate student Zoe Cook assisting. The Ducks led 3-2 after one. The second quarter belonged to the Mammoths though, as Amherst scored four unanswered to lead 6-3 at the break.

The Mammoths scored the first two goals out of the half as their lead jumped to five. Stevens would have a goal scoring drought of over 20 minutes until Zoe Cook ended it with a free-position goal at the 10:21 mark of the third. Amherst quickly responded with one to go back up five, but junior Anna Velardi was able to get that goal back near the end of the quarter, as Amherst led 9-5 going into the fourth. That momentum would roll into the fourth as the Ducks tried to claw their way back. Just over two minutes in, Smart found the back of the net with Velardi assisting. Hogan would then score her 13th of the year with 11:31 to go as the Ducks got within two. Amherst would score the next to lead 10-7, but Stevens got two quick goals out of Sellitto and Hogan to get back within one. The Mammoths tacked on another goal with under five to go as they led 11-9. Velardi would later convert on a free-position attempt with 39 seconds left in the game to get Stevens within one. The Ducks would be unable to attempt a shot late with their final possession, as the Mammoths held on for the win.
