Softball Sweeps Arcadia Behind Big Games From Fischer and Tozduman

The Ducks are now tied for third in the MAC Freedom standings.

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 6, 2024) – Sophomore Kyra Fischer hit a bases-loaded double to score three in game one, while sophomore Ella Tozduman pitched a seven-inning shutout in game two, as Stevens Institute of Technology softball team beat Arcadia 5-4 in game one and 2-0 in game two Saturday afternoon in a MAC Freedom doubleheader at Weehawken Waterfront park.

Fischer (8-7) picked up the win in game one. She pitched six innings and allowed four runs on ten hits. She also struck out two. Sophomore Ashley Allen (1) earned the save in the game, as she pitched the final inning and didn't allow a base runner.

Tozduman (2-1) earned the shutout victory in the second game. She allowed just five hits in the contest and struck out three. It is the first seven-inning shutout of her career.

The Ducks (13-11, 5-3) have turned the tide after losing five of the previous six. Stevens also improved to 8-4 in Weehawken home games this year (Played two games in Weehawken as the road team earlier this season). The Ducks currently sit tied for third in the MAC Freedom standings. With the wins, Stevens is now 15-6 all-time against Arcadia. The Knights fell to 7-17 and 1-7 in MAC Freedom play with the loss.

The Rundown (Game 1)

  • Arcadia scored two runs in the second to take the early lead.
  • Stevens cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second. After Fischer singled to center, first-year Elizabeth Kirstein laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Fischer to second. Sophomore Joy Pikul would bring Fischer home in the next at-bat, as she delivered a single to left.
  • The Knights regained the two-run advantage in the top of the third.
  • Senior Jessica Guerrero singled to leadoff the bottom of the third inning. After two quick outs, junior Madison Subbiondo singled to right center, which allowed Guerrero to reach home as the Ducks now trailed 3-2.
  • The fifth inning started rather uneventful for Stevens, as two batters got out to start the frame. Junior Emma Ruiz would turn things around after that, as she singled to get a runner on base for the Ducks. Junior Rachael Prescott walked in the next at-bat, followed by a single from Subbiondo, as the Ducks loaded the bases. Needing runs, Fischer delivered a clutch double to left as she cleared the bases, putting the Ducks up 5-3.
  • Arcadia got a run back in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Ducks held on for the win.

The Rundown (Game 2)

  • The momentum from game one carried over to game two, as the Ducks struck in the bottom of the first. Guerrero had a leadoff double and would later reach third after a sacrifice bunt from first-year Adrianna Albano. Guerrero would reach home in the inning after a sacrifice fly from Subbiondo as the Ducks went up 1-0.
  • Tozduman went 1-2-3 in both the first and the third innings. She would later add another in the fifth.
  • Stevens had a runner in scoring position in the third, but were unable to convert.
  • The Ducks doubled their advantage in the bottom of the fifth. Graduate student Elise Fauske walked to start the inning and then stole second. Fauske would then steal third, and would score on a sacrifice fly from Guerrero. The score would hold, as the Ducks secured the sweep.
