Women's Soccer Shuts Out Potsdam 1-0 In First Win Of The Season

Hoboken, N.J. –  First-year Sophia Murphy netted her first collegiate goal in the 10th minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team topped SUNY Potsdam 1-0 in the Opening Match of the 20th Engineering Cup on Saturday morning.

Head Coach Stuart Dick notched his first victory at the helm of Stevens (1-2) as the Ducks outshot Potsdam 28-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens peppered the Potsdam goalkeeper, Megan Fry, with shots all contest. Fry made three saves in the opening nine minutes before the Ducks broke through in the 10th minute. Lauren Alley corralled a ball on the right side and sent a cross into the box. Murphy gathered it and snuck a shot past, making it 1-0.

The Ducks continued to apply pressure, as consecutive attempts by Nicole Angelini were stopped in the 22nd minute. Goalkeeper Madelyn Nau was not tested in the opening 45 minutes, as the Stevens defense stifled Potsdam and held them shotless. In total, Stevens had a 13-0 advantage in shots in the first half, as Fry made eight saves.

The barrage continued into the second half, with Angela Dinh getting denied twice in the 51st and 52nd minute. The Bears put their first shot on target in the 74th minute, but Nau was able to make the stop. Stevens had four additional shots on target late in the game, but Fry turned each away. The Bears looked to equalize in the 88th minute, but Nau pushed a shot from Emily Jordan over the crossbar, and they could not capitalize off the corner.

FROM THE FIELD
"It's great to get the first win of the season under our belts, and we will look to build on this tomorrow against NYU. It was a dominant performance, but we had to start turning our dominance into goals. I'm very confident in this group of players that the goals will start to flow soon. We are creating plenty of chances." – Head Coach Stuart Dick.

UP NEXT
The Ducks will host NYU tomorrow, and the game time at the DeBaun Athletic Complex is scheduled for 4 pm.
