Dinh, Alley Net Goals in NCAA First Round Victory Over Virginia Wesleyan

Baltimore, Md. – Seniors Angela Dinh and Lauren Alley recorded goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team blanked Virginia Wesleyan University 2-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

With the victory, Stevens (12-3-6) advances to face No. 19 Johns Hopkins University tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Jays earned a 2-0 win over St. John Fisher in the other matchup at Homewood Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks registered the first shot on goal just 3:11 into the match, as Taylor Truglia's free kick was stopped. Kenny Donley was tested in the ninth minute, denying a shot from Shyenne Diaz that rolled out for a corner kick, and she made another save in the 10th minute on an attempt from Zyon Ferguson.

Stevens opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Off a corner kick, Sarah Wnorowski served a ball that Malia Chopra flicked on. The ball settled at the foot of Dinh, who fired past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. The Ducks continued to generate chances, but shots from Chopra, Sophia Murphy, and Alina Friz were all turned away. Friz nearly doubled the lead in the 44th minute when her strike from distance beat the keeper but deflected off the near post and was pushed out for a corner.

Stevens' defense tightened as the half progressed, limiting the Marlins to just one shot over the final 35 minutes and outshooting VWU 8-3 in the opening stanza.

The Ducks continued to push forward in search of a second goal and nearly found it in the 54th minute. After a foul, Truglia sent a free kick just over the crossbar. Four minutes later, Stevens capitalized on another set piece. Off a restart, Hanna Kusinski sent a long ball into the box that was cleared but not out. Alley met it with a clean side volley into the middle of the net, doubling the lead.

Donley stopped a shot in the 63rd minute and made one final save in the 86th to preserve the clean sheet. The Ducks' back line remained resolute, holding the Marlins — who entered averaging 17.4 shots per game — to just six attempts over 90 minutes.
