Softball Sweeps Hunter, 7-4 and 9-8

Weehawken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team tallied victories in both of a doubleheader, taking two from Hunter College in their home-opener on Wednesday.

Stevens (3-7) won 7-4 and 9-8 behind three hits from Allison Mitloff in game one and a walk-off single by Jessica Guerrero in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks raced out to a 5-0 advantage after two innings and a 6-0 lead after three in the opening contest. Guerrero was the table-setter in the bottom of the first, leading with a single and moving to third on a bunt single from Riley Lawrence. Emma Quattrochi was up next and dropped a double down the left field line. After a groundout, Rachael Prescott brought Quattrochi in with a double to left.

Kyra Fischer fanned two Hawks in the second and the Ducks loaded the bases in the home half. Fischer was hit by a pitch, Lily Cournoyer walked, and Mitloff reached on an infield hit. After a fielder's choice at home, Lawrence slapped a single to left, scoring Cournoyer and Mitloff. Quattrochi capped off the second inning scoring with a sacrifice fly with center, plating Guerrero. The Ducks added an unearned run in the third, as a bunt single from Mitloff scored Madison Subbiondo, who reached on a single up the middle and moved up on an error.

The Hawks dug into the lead in the fourth, capitalizing on a bases loaded and an RBI double. Stevens limited damage on the double as they gunned runner out as Quattrochi fired into Guerrero who gunned a throw to Subbiondo at the plate. Cournoyer led off the sixth with a walk and after swiping second, came out on a Mitloff double that glanced off the shortstops glove and went into left field. The Hawks didn't go easy in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. After a wild pitch and groundout made it 7-4, Fischer notched a strikeout to clinch game one.

Hunter opened the scoring in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Stevens defense prevented any additional runs from crossing the plate, trapping the trail runner in a rundown to retire the side with only two runs scoring. The Ducks erupted for five in the home half of the frame. Guerrero led off with a walk and two batters later, Quattrochi drew a four pitch walk. Prescott came up and belted a 1-0 offering deep over the left-center field fence for her second homer of the year. The inning continued, with Subbiondo scoring on wild pitch and Isabelle Won crossing the plate on a Megan Curtis double.

The two sides traded tallies in the second, with Prescott scoring Guerrero on a triple down the right field line. Mitloff led off the fourth with triple and after a Guerrero walk, stole home as the senior
was in a rundown. The Hawks battled back, taking an 8-7 lead after dropping a five spot in the fifth. Back-to-back sac flies tied the game at seven, and a home run to centerfield pushed the Hawks in front by a run.

After a scoreless sixth, Jessica Hsu notched three strikeouts in the seventh, including the final one on a full count with runners at first and second. The Ducks fought back and claimed the victory in the bottom of the inning. Carmelita Murphy-Brown led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout, Curtis tied the contest with an RBI triple to right. Mitloff reached on a fielders choice after the catcher was called for obstruction with Curtis caught in a rundown. Guerrero stepped up and bounced a chopper through the left side, scoring Curtis and giving Stevens the win.
