Hoboken, N.J. – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated No. 21 University of Chicago 15-9 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Stefanie Sellitto led Stevens (5-2) with six goals and an assist, while Lulu Hardy scored five goals for Chicago (5-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Maroons opened the game with the first two goals in the first 4:42. Stevens had two early chances to break through, but
Emily Leiby and
Emily Smart were denied by goalkeeper Rachel Keefe. Sellitto put Stevens on the board midway through the opening period, netting a goal off an
Anna Velardi assist.
Maddie Hogan leveled the game at the 5:52 mark, but the Maroons took advantage of a penalty to convert with the extra player 27 seconds later.
Lindsay Esposito forced a turnover on the next Chicago possession, and in transition,
Alison Lax tied the game at three off a Leiby feed. As time expired in the opening period, Stevens took its first lead of the game with one second left, as
Abby O'Brien beat the buzzer to give the home team a 4-3 lead after one.
Chicago opened the second stanza with two goals, regaining the lead. Stevens called a timeout, which paid off as O'Brien netted her second goal of the game, once again leveling the score. O'Brien's tally sparked the Stevens offense, as the Ducks reeled off the next four goals. Lax scored off a Hogan assist with 7:53 remaining in the second before Sellitto registered an unassisted marker 28 seconds later. Leiby capped the run with a free-position goal, extending the Ducks' lead to 8-5. The visitors responded with three of the final four goals of the period over the last 2:56, but Stevens entered halftime with a 9-8 advantage.
Stevens outshot Chicago 21-15 in the first half and held a slim 11-7 edge in draw controls.
Sellitto opened second-half scoring 2:01 into the third, converting a pass from Smart. The goal kickstarted a 4-0 third-quarter run for Stevens, as Hogan, Sellitto, and Smart added goals.
Felicity Heilferty kept the Maroons off the scoreboard in the third, stopping three attempts. The two teams traded goals early in the fourth before Sellitto capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:46 remaining. Heilferty once again came up big in the fourth, turning away four shots to secure the win.
