MADISON, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Drew on Wednesday afternoon, winning 11-7 and 10-3 while notching 29 hits across the two games.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
Stevens (9-13) put three on the board across the first two innings.
Jessica Guerrero singled to lead off the game, then after a
Megan Curtis sac bunt, scored on an
Emma Quattrochi triple, with Quattrochi later scoring on a
Jessica Hsu fielder's choice. In the second,
Riley Lawrence led off with a single, advanced to second on an error, and scored on a Guerrero double.
The 3-0 lead held into the fourth when the Ducks sought to break the game open.
Allison Mitloff led off with a double and came around to score on a Curtis two-bagger two batters later. After Quattrochi reached on a bunt single then stole second, with two out,
Rachael Prescott reached on an error, with Curtis coming home on the play. Subbiondo followed with another double, driving in Quattrochi and Prescott for a 7-0 Stevens lead.
Drew (8-8) put four on the board themselves in the bottom of the fourth, but back-to-back singles from Lawrence and Mitloff, an RBI single from Guerrero, and a Quattrochi put the Ducks back up five, 9-4, after five. Drew got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but a Guerrero single, Curtis double, Quattrochi RBI groundout, and
Emma Ruiz sacrifice fly in the seventh put the Ducks up 11-5.
The Rangers pushed two across in the bottom of the seventh, but Fischer closed out her 10
th complete game of the season for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Guerrero remained locked in at the plate, leading off with a single. After Curtis sacrificed Guerrero to second, Quattrochi singled and took second on the throw in, putting two in scoring position with one out. After Hsu drove in Guerrero with a groundout, Prescott knocked in Quattrochi with a single to center.
Drew got a run back in the bottom of the first, the final baserunner to advance past second base until the fifth inning. Lawrence, Mitloff, and Guerrero all singled, loading the bases with one out. Next up stepped Curtis, who delivered perhaps the biggest swing of the day, clearing the bases with a triple tucked just inside the right field foul line; Curtis later came home on a Hsu double. The Rangers got two back in the bottom of the frame, but the Ducks' bats stayed red-hot in the sixth.
With two out and pinch-runner
Adrianna Albano on third, Guerrero drove her in with a base hit up the middle. After Curtis was hit by a pitch, Quattrochi singled up the middle, scoring Guerrero, with both runners on base advancing an extra 60 feet on the throw back in. Hsu took full advantage of the two in scoring position, driving both in with a base hit to right, putting the Red and Gray up 10-3. The game was called due to darkness after a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Drew.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The team's 16 hits in Game 1 matched a season high and the 29 hits across both games were the most by the program in a doubleheader since April 10, 2012 against Hunter.
- With seven doubles in Game 1, the team broke the single-game program record of six set against FDU in 2022 and Widener in 2021.
- Subbiondo's three doubles in Game 1 were just the sixth such instance in program history and the first since Siobhan Cottell on May 5, 2022.
- Guerrero hit .778 for the day (7-for-9), scoring four runs and driving in three more, raising her season average 25 points.
- Quattrochi finished both games 2-for-4 with two runs, driving in four, three of those RBIs coming in Game 1.
- Curtis raised her season batting average more than 50 points with a 4-for-6 afternoon, scoring four and driving in four.
