No. 9 Wesleyan Tops No. 20 Women's Lacrosse

Middletown, Conn. – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 9 Wesleyan University, 13-4, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Maddie Hogan led Stevens (3-2) with two goals, while Alex Riley and Dylan Green each netted three for Wesleyan (1-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened the scoring just 1:22 into the contest, converting a free-position attempt. They doubled their lead with 10:26 left in the opening period before Stevens got on the board at the 9:50 mark. Lauren Sullivan corralled the draw control, and after a foul, Hogan netted her first goal of the game off an assist from Rebecca Guerra.

After Wesleyan extended its lead to 3-1, goalkeeper Felicity Heilferty made three consecutive saves to keep the Cardinals at bay. Hogan tallied her second goal of the afternoon off an Anna Velardi assist, pulling the Ducks within one. However, the home team notched the final tally of the quarter with 25 seconds remaining to take a 4-2 lead after one.
Wesleyan continued to build on its lead in the second quarter, scoring twice in the first two minutes of the period.

The Cardinals added three more goals before halftime, taking an 8-2 advantage into the break. Their defense was stifling, limiting Stevens to just two shots in the second quarter and five in the first half. Heilferty and Emma Guzowski combined for seven first-half saves for the Ducks.

Velardi got Stevens on the board first in the third quarter, finishing off Guerra's second assist of the game. The teams then traded goals, with Emily Smart scoring midway through the period off an assist from Alison Lax. Wesleyan added two more goals in the final 16 seconds of the third before sealing the victory with two additional markers in the fourth quarter.
