WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team rallied from 4-2 down in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 and 6-2 down in the bottom of the fourth in Game 2 of a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom sweep of Delaware Valley Saturday on Senior Day from Weehawken Waterfront Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
Down 2-0 in the third, the Ducks pushed across two without the ball leaving the infield.
Elizabeth Kirstein reached on an error leading, moved to second on a
Riley Lawrence sac bunt, and took third on an
Allison Mitloff bunt single. After Mitloff stole second,
Jessica Guerrero and
Megan Curtis both walked, Kirstein coming home on Curtis' free pass.
Emma Quattrochi followed Curtis with a fielder's choice, Mitloff scoring the tying run on the play.
Delaware Valley went back in front in the fourth then made it a two-run game in the seventh, setting the stage for the first comeback of the day. Curtis led off with a walk and stole second. Quattrochi reached on an error and wound up at second, putting two runners in scoring position for
Rachael Prescott, who tied the game with a base hit to right.
After
Elizabeth Kirstein singled Prescott to second,
Riley Lawrence capped the rally with a walk-off single to center.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
Delaware Valley jumped in front early with a three-run homer in the first, but Stevens (20-16, 9-3 MACF) got two runs back in the second. Three straight one-out singles from Kirstein, Lawrence, and Mitloff loaded the bases for Guerrero, who was hit by a pitch, forcing home Kirstein. Curtis followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Lawrence.
Guerrero and Curtis were both hit by pitches leading off for the Ducks. With one out, Hsu singled up the middle, scoring Guerrero, taking second on the throw while Curtis took third.
Rachael Prescott followed with a sacrifice bunt, plating Curtis.
The Aggies tacked on two in the third and one in the, opening a four-run cushion before the Ducks reeled off their second major response of the day.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kirstein reached on catcher's interference with one out, Lawrence followed with a single up the middle, and Mitloff followed with a Kirstein-scoring single to left, advancing to second on the throw home. After Guerrero reached on a bunt single to load the bases, Curtis drew her second bases loaded walk of the day, scoring Lawrence. Two batters later, with two out and the bases still loaded,
Jessica Hsu provided the Ducks' biggest swing of the game, clearing the bases with a double to left-center, shooting the Red and Gray in front, 7-6. Prescott followed with another double to left-center, scoring Hsu.
Armed with the two-run advantage,
Ella Tozduman yielded a single base-runner via error over the final three frames, closing out the Ducks' 20
th win of the season.
Between Games 1 and 2, the Ducks celebrated the program's four graduating members: Curtis, Prescott,
Madison Subbiondo, and
Emma Ruiz.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- For the fourth time this season, the contact-heavy Ducks finished a doubleheader with one strikeout or fewer.
- Kyra Fischer went the distance in Game 1 for her 10th win of the year, a new single-season high.
- Mitloff finished the day 5-for-6, raising her batting average for the season to .481, including a robust .568 in conference play. She's hit safely in all 12 MAC Freedom games, notching multiple hits in eight contests.
