No. 25 Field Hockey Moves to 5-0 With 5-1 Win Over Swarthmore

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team continued its dominant start to the season with a convincing 5–1 victory over Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon from DeBaun Athletic Complex.

No. 25 in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Poll and coming off a 5-1 victory over No. 9 Rowan earlier in the week, the Ducks scored in every quarter, improving to 5-0 for the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first 12 minutes, the Ducks broke through twice in a 70-second span. Off a penalty corner, Kylee Scherer redirected a feed from Sophia Cozza for the first goal of the match. Just over a minute later, Cozza doubled the advantage herself, finishing a setup from Molly DiCampli to give Stevens a quick 2–0 lead.

Stevens goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki stood tall for Stevens in the second quarter, turning away five shots on goal from Swarthmore after the Garnet did not register a single attempt in the first quarter. Midway through the period, Cozza struck for her second of the game, pushing the lead to 3–0. The Garnet finally broke through just before the half, cutting the deficit to 3–1.

The third quarter saw momentum swing back to the Ducks. After a green card issued to Swarthmore left the visitors shorthanded, Stevens capitalized. Gabi Moroney re-directed a shot from DiCampli off a penalty corner insertion from Lauren Flynn, restoring a three-goal cushion at 4–1.

In the final frame, Wierzbicki made four more saves to preserve the lead, while Emilia Lopes put the icing on the cake with a goal in the final 70 seconds.
