Softball Falls to Misericordia in MAC Freedom Doubleheader

Weehawken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Misericordia University on Sunday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action.

The Ducks (12-10, 3-5 MAC Freedom) fell 9-1 in five innings before dropping a 5-3 decision in 10 innings in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first frame, the Cougars put up two runs in the second, scoring on a single to left and an RBI groundout. The guests doubled their advantage in the third, plating runs on a double to right-center and a fielder's choice. Emma Quattrochi doubled with one out in the third and moved to third on a groundout but was unable to score, as a ground ball closed out the inning.

Stevens got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Jessica Hsu and Isabela Lipsky singled to lead off the inning, and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Kyra Fischer. Isabelle Won reached on an infield single, scoring Hsu from third. Misericordia tacked on five runs in the fifth, including runs on a groundout and a sacrifice fly. Carmelita Murphy-Brown notched a two-out single in the fifth, but a lineout to second ended the first game.

Stevens starter Ella Tozduman set the Cougars down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning and worked around a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second. After a walk and two singles filled the bases, Tozduman got a fly ball to right field for the first out. The runner on third broke too early when tagging up, so Murphy-Brown alertly fired to Won for the 9-3-5 double play. The senior ended the threat with a swinging strikeout.

The Cougars got two on the board in the third, as a double with the bases loaded scored two. Fischer entered in relief and notched a strikeout and groundout to retire the side. The Ducks got one in the bottom of the fourth, as Lipsky crossed the plate after a pair of Misericordia throwing errors.

Stevens took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Lilian Cournoyer laced a double down the right-field line and moved to third on a Quattrochi sacrifice. Madison DiSarno lined a triple to the right-field gap, tying the game at two. Two batters later, Hsu reached on a fielding error, scoring DiSarno.

Fischer retired Misericordia on six pitches in the sixth, as Stevens once again threatened. Angelique Ceballos-Cardona reached on a fielder's choice, Cournoyer walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. They were stranded, as a groundout closed out the inning. Misericordia tied things at three in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout, and Stevens once again made noise in the seventh. DiSarno reached on an error and moved to second on an infield single by Murphy-Brown. The threat was squashed, as a double play finished the inning.

The Ducks turned a 6-3 double play in the top of the eighth, but Misericordia filled the bases with two outs. Riley Lawrence fielded a grounder and stepped on second, keeping the game level at three. Won and Cournoyer singled with two outs in the eighth, but a lineout moved the game into the ninth. Neither side scored in the ninth before Misericordia got two in the 10th to take the win.
