11-Run Sixth Inning Leads Softball Past Bethel

Columbus, Ga. – The Stevens Institute of Technology rallied from six runs down in the fifth inning against Bethel College to earn a split during the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday.

The Ducks (4-4) were topped by Pacific Lutheran University 15-6 before knocking off Bethel 12-9. A recap for the Pacific Lutheran game will be provided once statistics are received.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Bethel)
Stevens fell behind 4-0 after three innings, with the Royals scoring on a three-run triple and an RBI single. The Royals added to their advantage in the bottom of the third, as a two-out RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0.

The Ducks got on the board in the fifth, as Angelique Ceballos-Cardona reached on a one-out error. A Kacey DiPasquale single moved the first-year to second, and she was brought in on an Allison Mitloff RBI single to center. Kyra Fischer got through the fifth unscathed before the Ducks had their highest-scoring inning of the season in the sixth.

Emma Quattrochi got the rally started with a walk and promptly stole second. A single by Maria Dante put runners on the corners and Carmelita Murphy-Brown walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice retired one, Fischer helped out her own cause with a two-run double. That hit triggered three consecutive two-baggers, with Ceballos-Cardona and DiPasquale following suit. Mitloff, Quattrochi, and Murphy-Brown all tallied run-scoring singles, and with the bases loaded, Disarno roped a single to center that eluded the centerfielder, scoring all four runners. In total, Stevens put up 11 runs on nine hits during the stanza.

The Royals dug into the lead in the bottom of the frame with two tallies, but Fischer coaxed a pop-out to second to end the threat. Bethel tacked on one more in the seventh after Fischer struck the first two hitters out, but a foul out to left completed the comeback victory.

Mitloff went 3-for-5 with two RBI and added a stolen base.
